Anyone know if attendance at Human Physio workshops is compulsory? Reviews all mention something about a fortnightly CAL but I'm not too sure

from the email
'As it turns out, timetabling doesn't allow more students to register for a session than there are seats in the lecture theatre.  They gave us a lecture theatre that holds 200 for a class of 650.  As it is an optional session, this should be fine for fitting those who come, but it prevented everyone from being able to actually register for the session'

so seems it's optional except for when the 2 MST's are scheduled in that timeslot

Hi guys,
A bit of a curly question, but does anyone know about UMEP maths and the concurrent diploma? (Maybe people who did UMEP Maths and are doing the diploma haha).
UMEP credits as MAST10008, but the unimelb staff I've spoken to are uncertain about whether that exemption/credit can be cross-credited into the Diploma. If it can't, then it entails a overhaul of my course plan :P Waiting till Monday for a definitive answer, but if anyone has prior experience... it would be much appreciated ;)

Also, I've heard (from one staff member) that you can voluntarily sit in on some lectures (??) at uni, even if not enrolled? Is this true??

I really don't see why they wouldn't? It could just be that they've never done it before, but there's no reason why they wouldn't be able to.

Yeah. I mean, they don't take rolls in the lectures or anything, how will they know if you're not enrolled in the unit? :P Particularly in some of the bigger units with up 1000 or more students in them.

Can confirm. I once say in some microbiology lecture for 20 minutes one morning before my brain finally woke up and I realised I was an hour early for my class. But I was in the middle of a row and this was back in first year when I felt too awkward to leave halfway through, so I just sat there for another 40 minutes pretending I knew what xenophyophores were.

Some people will tag along to random lectures with friends, or will look up a subject's timetable and go along to any subjects that they think sound interesting, though you have to be careful the cohort isn't too small, otherwise one of the staff members might notice. I even did a subject that encouraged us to invite other people along once a week when we had guest lecturers :P Technically you're not meant to do this, but you can easily get away with it.

Hmm the reason is that the handbook specifies 'credit for subjects completed in the degree', while UMEP credits to its own programme, and qualifies as an exemption + advanced standing towards the degree only.
I think this is a bit of an edge case and hopefully they will be nice and say yes haha. I don't think the handbook entry was written with UMEP in mind :P

I plan to do a double major in Commerce (Finance + Eco) and Engineering after.

Is this course plan feasible (doing year 3 subjects in year 2) and will satisfy the subjects for both the major?

Blue = eco
Orange = finance
Black = Engineering

Would you also need to complete linear algebra at some point?

Eng Maths requires the completion of Linear Algebra, so that plan wouldn't quite work. Since there are only 300 points in a degree, you could do Lin Alg as a capstone subject(full fee however) in summer so that you can complete the double major.

Yeah I plan to do Linear Algebra next summer.

Thanks :)

Isn't finance 1 an optional subject? So you could replace that with Linear Algebra Edit: I was wrong you also need an accounting subject for the prereqs for Business Finance https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2013/FNCE20001

I think it has to be a commerce elective and not normal breadth.

Hmm.......I have a clash at that time with quantum physics
Let's see how this pans out

2012

You might have thought of this already, but just in case, have you already planned the use of (up to) 2 Community Access Program subjects that are offered free of charge as part of the Chancellor's Scholars Program? I'm having a hard time finding the exact policy, but this is stated here:
Quote
2.5.    If a faculty approves a Chancellors Scholar’s enrolment in a Community Access Program subject within the rules of the Over-enrolment Procedure, the student may receive a fee remission for that subject. The relevant faculty staff member must contact Melbourne Scholarships about these arrangements as soon as they are approved.
and for what it's worth, I've heard from my own friends in the Chancellor's Scholars Program that they indeed have the option of studying (up to) 2 subjects through the Community Access Program free of charge (may be buried in your paperwork somewhere).

If you haven't, then these 2 subjects could be somewhat of a buffer for you even if UMEP isn't eligible for cross-crediting towards the Diploma in Mathematical Sciences, so that you won't necessarily need to overhaul your entire study plan if it doesn't work out your way.

Otherwise I don't really have a solution, but I am kind of interested in knowing how this works out because I had the same problem when I started too.
Thoughts on my journey through university
2014–2016 BCom (Actl), DipMathSc @ UoM
2017–2018 Master of Science (Mathematics and Statistics) @ UoM

Also, do subject offerings in mainstream disciplines change between years? Namely chem, life sciences/biosciences, and maths :P
I.e. if its Sem 1, Sem 1&2, Sem 2 will the availability stay the same to a high probability? I need to assess how accurate my course plan will be haha
