In regards to the prac, how do we go about the report writing component? Unlike the first bio prac which is a mock, this one gets marked right? So what happens in regards to our lack of experience and not knowing what to do.

Hey guys,

Is there a way to export your unimelb calendar to google calendar or ical?

Cheers!
This is not official and I cant guarantee the accuracy of everything, but for the most part try thishttps://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/unimelb-timetable-to-ical/fjebhipnmjbnhfhcpoajoaembenmnllm?hl=en-GB

Also a query on that, I've read through the first prac (making paracetamol) and I'm a bit nervous at doing it on my own. Will they demo the first prac? Are chemistry pracs always individual? Are we allowed to ask for assistance if we don't know how to carry out particular steps?

It's probably best if you rationalise the paracetamol prac as some kind of sadistic initiation, because that's what it felt like.

Like mieow, I had a substitute demonstrator who was hopelessly vague. Chemistry pracs are pretty disappointing overall to be honest, but please don't let that dampen your enthusiasm for practical work. In the later years it's wonderful :)

I have the paracetamol prac tomorrow morning (Chemistry 1) and I'm nervous as fuck. I've never done a prac on my own nor written a prac report in the last two years (the school didn't have SACs where I have to write up a report in the real sense).

So guys I have a practical class for Chem tomorrow, I just need to bring my lab coat, glasses and the prac workbook thing?

Don't stress at all, just take it easy. I'm sure they'll also be nice as lots of people haven't written a proper prac before. If worse case, just watch some YouTube tutorials, or Google prac templates, that's what I did for biology last year

Looking at the attached imaged, I am in group 9, but for tomorrow there is no E# for group 9, but on my timetable I do have a chem practical at 10am. Does this mean I do not have to go to tomorrows 10am class?

Practicals for Chem are not every week. You already know we only have to do six throughout the semester. This timetable gives us an indication of the sessions we do/do not need to attend. So in summary, you are one lucky man/woman. I got to do mine on Thursday. You most likely have your practical on the following week.

awwww trams and libraries are going to be so full again starting tomorrow :( Loved every minute of summer semester campus.

The paracetamol prac was the most memorable chem prac for me (I've forgotten about all the other pracs) because i felt like Walter White from breaking bad :P Good luck to all the Jaffys out there.

How does the free tram zone work? If I board the tram from Flinders to melb uni, do I ever touch on during the journey? I always see half the people touch on and the other half not.

You just do not have to touch on, but as soon as you pass Melbourne Central, touch on ASAP. I jumped on at MC, and legit 5 minutes later, under cover inspectors pulled out their machines and started checking people..

I'm not sure... it's a leap year, and the cards are "valid until the 29th," so it's possible we might have an extra day? They'll definitely be out in full force this week at uni tram stops and at North Melbourne station, so for those who haven't sorted out their concession cards, do so asap, seek alternate transport, get a full fare myki, or be prepared to get fined :-\

The free tram zone along Swanston St. ends at Melb. Central Station/ the State Library, so if you're going anywhere from RMIT north (including Melb. uni,) you need to have touched on beforehand. So you would need to either touch on at Flinders when you board, or at Melb. Central before you leave the free zone. Technically if you're going from Melb. Central to RMIT without having touched on, they can fine you. It'd be kind of dickish, and the student magazine has often railed against how the free zone goes out of its way to include a bunch of tourist attractions like the arts centre and Vic. market but doesn't include the nearby unis. Them's the rules, though.

You just do not have to touch on, but as soon as you pass Melbourne Central, touch on ASAP. I jumped on at MC, and legit 5 minutes later, under cover inspectors pulled out their machines and started checking people..
I swear some of them take way too much delight in doing that ninja-esque-pop-out-from-behind-the-shadows-TICKETS-PLEASE thing  ::)

For those doing the chem prac tomorrow, don't forget to do the Chemcal and bring your lab coat, saftey glasses/goggles, lab book and the carbon book. As for writing a prac report, I believe there's something at the back of the lab book that explains the parts that you need or was that in the first prac? Either way you can just ask your demonstrator. This was the layout I was told: Aim, Hypothesis, Method (Only write the method if it's a synthesis prac which the first one is and you just summarise it), Results, Discussion and Conclusion.

You can basically do aim, hypothesis and method at home. Don't forget to write down the synthesis equations somewhere in your prac report. Also you can work together as in do the steps with the person next to you or across from you while doing it on your own if that makes sense. Get to know your prac group, you'll all soon form a tight knit group that helps each other out. Oh and turn off your suction before removing the funnel. And when removing the funnel, use one have to cover the top and do a wiggle motion. I made the mistake of taking the funnel out without covering the top and 95% of my powder flying out. Needless to say I wanted to hide in a corner

You will need to touch on as soon as you leave the free tram zone. The UoM tram stop on swanston is notorious for ticket inspectors loitering around.
