I go to each LING20011 lecture I have but today it wasn't convenient for me so I watched the recording at home. As soon as the lecture starts the lecturer informs that he will be taking the roll and sending emails to the students not present about their attendance.
FML why must things always screw up the moment I rely on the lecture recording? XD
If that lecturer is Peter Hurst who I think was taking over LING20011, the rule he gave us in Syntax last semester was that if you emailed him promptly (ie. before the next lecture) then he'll mark you as 'attending' since you're clearly on top of the content and keeping up to date, as opposed to people who never get around to watching lectures they miss, or postponing their catch up till the mid-sem break

I'm sure he'll be nice, especially if you tell him you've been attending all the others and that today was the exception.
Also he told us it's just for his own bell curves since he likes mapping 'average marks of students who attend lectures' vs. 'average of those who don't' as a means of encouraging people to attend, so you won't actually be penalised numerically :3
I recall someone saying here that from 2016, all lectures will be recorded at UoM. However, BLAW isn't recorded for us. How come?
Officially, lecturers are no longer allowed to refuse to record lectures for "non-trivial reasons," meaning the 'I want people to attend so I'm not going to offer recordings' argument should no longer be valid. I believe some Maths/Physics subjects get away with it because their lectures are highly practical/demonstrative, and if there's no video capture of what's on the document cam. or whiteboard then an audio recording isn't even all that useful. But I've still had a few subjects that haven't made recordings available for seemingly no reason, so idk what's going on. Definitely chuck a complaint in the SAS feedback survey at the end of semester since if the majority of a cohort says something, they're kind of obliged to take it into account. Unfortunately there's not much else more we can do :/
I thought the lecturers need to set the recording themselves because some of my subjects have really dodgy recordings (eg. just audio and no slides, or a bunch of background noise for 50 min and no lecture...)
Also how long does it usually take for a CREM thing to be processed? Enrolled in bio but not registered in any classes because I enrolled after the self registration thing closed, so I'm just going to random classes so I don't miss anything and experiencing the inevitable awkwardness that comes with it :/
& if I'm not registered in classes, what's going to happen to my attendance?! #jaffy
I'm going to see my questions in this thread next year and cringe so hard
I think the timing is automated, yes, but I think the lecturers can just delete the recording manually or just refuse to upload it.
Regarding your bio enrollment, the CREM thing is new this year so I don't know much about it; normally things like that get processed within a week but the mid-sem break might push that back a little further. Emailing the coordinator would be a good thing to do while waiting, though.
Attendance-wise, you should definitely talk to your tutor or whoever's running the classes where attendance is marked and just say 'hey, I'm going through the rollercoaster that is manual enrollment, and it should be sorted within a week or so, but I want to make sure I hit the attendance requirement so could you add my name to your roll?'
Dw, this stuff is rather unintuitive, and it's kind of odd they don't explain it to you seeing as most people will have at least one semester where they pick up/change/drop subjects. But once you've got a line of communication with an actual human (ie. one of the bio lecturers/tutors) you'll be in a better position than just waiting for the magic IT system to sort itself out
