Firm alarm & evacuation in today's morning exam :(
Well, at least I now know REB does have working smoke detectors.

What, during the exam? How did they recover from that? That would have been anarchy.

It happened with about 30 minutes left in a 3-hour session. We left immediately after the alarm went off and were told that our exam was now finished once we were outside. They collected our papers while we were outside and then let us back in afterwards to collect our belongings.

Wasn't too rowdy; seems our natural reaction to fire alarms is to assume it's a fire drill. We didn't make much of a mess while leaving.

As for the exam itself, we were told that scripts are still being submitted as-is, but we'll have to wait to find out what happens with marking, grades, or possibly alternative exams.

University policy book says
Quote
5.82.           In the event of a disruption to an examination resulting in students having to leave the venue, the examination will be cancelled and appropriate alternative examination arrangements made which may include rescheduling the examination.

Congrats to everyone here who got a med offer this week. Really looking forward to seeing those of you who got into Melb around the traps :D

I'm very relieved that the randomisation allocated me to the North/West clinical zone and that I didn't end up with a rural placement (I've been waiting for this information before replying hahaha). It wasn't my first preference but I'm still really happy with it. I've heard good things about the Northern Hospital in particular. I'm really looking forward to it next year - I've gone from being totally disillusioned at the start of the year to quite confident in my decision. I guess I owe it to having a great time in third year: I loved my major and it showed in my marks, despite doing less study and having a hell of a lot going on in my life. I feel like things are on track again. :)

That's great :) Obviously in first year most of the information we get about the hospitals is fairly unreliable; but I have heard many good things about Northern and Western too. They seem to do really well to foster a community atmosphere at their hospitals, which I think is really important.

Congratulations too, I'm so glad for you (though never really doubted for a minute you'd get in!) :D

tbh I'd consider postgrad at, dare I say, another uni before considering doing another bachelor degree. A bachelor degree is another 3 years of your life and you can't even be certain you'll be better off. Maybe research other pathways to your postgrad course (eg a different uni, getting work experience), but otherwise I would choose Honours.

Agree with this. Depends a lot on what Masters' degree you're planning on doing.

And frankly - it's a pretty big gamble. There's no guarantee you'll get the grades you need the second time around, and it'll just be a waste of time and money.

masters is always the option here once you have on bachelors theres no need to get another and there are heaps of masters with minimal pre-reqs to enter you into new fields or anything

thank you everyone for your input

with the Masters I want to do, honestly I don't know at the moment I just want to keep a lot of options open

I know this sounds a bit ridiculous but I really do want to stay at UoM (it's also the most convenient uni for me) so whatever I end up doing will hopefully be there

is it as hard to get into UoM Masters as people say? eg. one of the courses I'm thinking about has a H3 WAM as a minimum requirement which seems alright but maybe in reality only people with H1 WAMs get in lol???

also can you transfer to another Masters course whilst enrolled in one? (sorry about all the questions guys but you know it's easy to find a lot of conflicting info and not know what's correct)

It kinda depends on the course I think. Try look at how competitive the course is and how many places are available and that should give you a decent idea. Some degrees have a pretty big difference between the minimum entry requirement and what you'd realistically need to be competitive (e.g. Postgrad psych is really selective, so honours technically needs a minimum of 70% but realistically you need 80~% - I dunno about masters but I assume it's even worse) but others are a lot less competitive. With teaching, 65% actually gets you guaranteed entry, and from what I've heard engineering has a shitload of places so the 65% minimum is probably pretty indicative of what you'd actually need. So yeah I guess it depends on what you wanna do, but people who have actually done postgrad will probably know more than me ;D

Well you shouldn't have doubted me getting in, given I had guaranteed entry. :P But we were all in the same boat when it came to the new randomised clinical zone allocation policy, and quite a few Chancellor's Scholars got assigned into the rural zone despite it being their last preference. I'm just glad that luck once again fell in my favour. Nonetheless, I appreciate the kind words. :)

Does anyone one know if you should be using the friction erasable pens during exams? I'm worried that my paper might come in contact with heat when scannning, and fade away.

For those who have done the commerce degree, what would you say is the "easiest" level 3 finance subject? I gotta do one in second year, and I heard Derivative Securities is tough so I'm tossing up between investments/Coorporate finance?

Also, does anyone know where I'd go about enrolling for linear algebra in the summer? I've tried to do so in the enrolling form but there doesn't seem to be space left in the level 1 breadth category where I've used 25/25 points.

I have to make this decision too with respect to 3rd year subjects. I think the general consensus is derivs is hard as !@#$, followed by investments and then corp fi (which I've heard is a rehash of bus fi with just a bit more elaboration). But, some people also find corp fi harder than investments so ehhh.

Does anyone have any suggestions on which semesters to take acc/finance 3rd year subjects?

I enjoyed the investments portion of Bus Fi far more than the Corp fi stuff (and found it much easier), so maybe it's down to personal preference.

That spot was taken up by ESD2 unfortunately :/

I think it has to do with the fact that I'll actually be doing 312.5 points instead of the standard 300, so there isn't enough space on the study plan to fit everything in. Will probably have to go see Stop 1.

yeah everyone is different with which is harder, the best gauge for you personally is which parts of business finance did you find easiest and which part did you find hardest, and base it off that. i know a guy who has been into finance for years and he said derivatives was by far the easiest one and I too found the derivatives portion of business finance to be the easiest part of bus fi but everyone else in my sem thought it was fkd. so its up to you, the general consensus though is that corpfi is easiest, followed by investments, followed by derivatives.
