To everyone with registration experience, is it hard to get the classes you want? (Even if you've fully planned your timetable and get there 10 on the dot). I'm starting to get really worried that it won't let me in when it opens :/
[/quote

It depends on whether the unimelb servers play up or not. Generally though if you get there at 10 exactly, and register for your classes as fast as humanly possible, you can get your preferred class selection. Good luck!

I haven't done it, but everyone I know who's done path has loved it. It's certainly not for some people, but if you like path you should find this subject OK. Also reasonably sure that most path subjects are reasonably easy (that seems to be the consensus anyway). If you're thinking of doing med it'd be great to have a path background (more so than anat and phys tbh).

Thank you for the response! Was just checking the MD start dates and it seems MD1-4 starts on Jan 30 this year. Does the teaching year for all Med students @ Unimelb always start in last week of Jan?
Pls do not send me a pm about Aspire applications. The process has vastly changed since I applied.

Last week of Jan, first week of Feb. Usually starts the same week that school starts.

Can anyone confirm/link me that from 2016/2017 you can't structure your units so you qualify for Masters of Engineering after your BCom? So now, if you wanted to study commerce and engineering it won't be possible at unimelb?

I've heard about this but couldn't find the source.

Hi all

Wondering if anyone who has done ZOOL20004 (Australian Wildlife Biology) might have tips on good reading material before the subject starts this year?

I'm looking to get a base-level understanding of some of the main topics.

Thanks!

Hi everyone!
Sorry for being such a Uni noob, but if anyone could help me out it would be much appreciated.

For BSci first year, are all the big subjects' lectures in a class stream? E.g if I register for a chem, bio or calculus lecture at 10 am on Monday, will I have to do the 10 am on Wednesday and Friday as well  :'(

Hadn't accounted for that in my mock timetable so a little bit stressed  ;)

Depends on the subject sometimes. In bio psych I could register in one lecture at 4:15pm one day and 2:15pm the other; i.e. they weren't 'streamed'. However, in that event that it does force you into a stream: do not stress. Nobody checks attendance in lectures, and it's very unlikely that they will get filled to 100% capacity if you get there on time.

As a result, you can rock up to most lectures for subjects you're not enrolled in, and especially 'alternate streams' that you're not necessarily registered in. Nobody will be walking around to make sure you 'belong there' (so to speak) in 1st year science lectures.

You should be fine. Hope this helps. :)

https://sws.unimelb.edu.au/2017/ (left hand side: subjects --> select --> semester 1 --> search)

Using the above website in addition to an excel document or piece of paper, you can slowly work through a tentative timetable for you to make during class registration.

Start off by organising which lectures will be compulsory/core and other classes that cannot be rearranged first. Then, fit in more flexible classes such as tutorials or pracs to try to find a timetable that suits your needs. If at first you don't succeed at snagging your desired spots, 20% of the class places are reserved to open up on 21 February (same time of day).

It might look a bit overwhelming at first. Keep in mind what classes you need to complete each week per subject by looking at handbook entries (e.g. it will say 2x 1 hr lecture a week + 1x 1hr tutorial).

I'm doing principles of genetics, physiology and principles of microbiology and immunology this sem, is there any point in slowly reading through the chapters of the textbooks? Is its a complete waste of time?

Sorry guys, but i have yet another question :P For AM1, Does it matter if i have prac 2 (the computer lab class) before prac 1(what im guessing is the stndard tute?) Thanks again

In AM1, your computer lab class (the second practical) is directly after your tutorial (the first practical). The class registration system will only let you enrol in pairs of pracs that are together.

For subjects with two lectures, does the tute need to be after the second lecture? e.g. If you schedule your tute in between them will you cover things you have not learnt yet?

I had that but at Monash. The tute would cover the first lecture and the 2nd lecture of last week. So covering two lectures in one tute.
