breadth at melb uni...does it mean anything?

I know that the breadth replaces the 'double degree' thing and provides us into another area of study. But unlike the double degrees, which give us TWO bachelor degrees at the end of the course, what does the breadth give us? More knowledge, but does it account towards anything, or is it almost 'simply wasting time'?

Im not so sure what to do! either i take up monash double degree in arts/science, or take melb uni arts and do some breadth in science subjects???

2010: TNT (39)
2011: English (42) | Bio (39) | Chem (35) | Jap (35) | Methods (36)|

ATAR: 95.50 ( i actually got my prediction! :D)

You can have an out-of-faculty major fairly easily without having to do an extra degree. I guess that could be useful, depending on what kinds of jobs you'd be looking for.

Bear in mind the length of each degree; a double degree, while leaving you wonderfully well-rounded takes 5 years, a straight Arts degree with breadth takes 3 years.
There are also diplomas, although I think they are more for Science students who want to study an artsy subject in depth.

nah monash its only 4 years..and if i were to just do a single degree at melb, i would also probably take a masters degree...which both adds up to 4 years...its just the breadth...does it account for much?

Yeah you definitely can. You can't do science and engineering concurrently though. You have to finish  your undergraduate science first.

I would say that there would be lots of commerce and probably science students who would be doing a Diploma in Languages (which you could and would say it's "artsy").  Also the Diploma in Mathematical Sciences is pretty popular amongst commerce students.  And better not forget the Diploma in Music.

science and engineering first year is common, so you do the same subjects. you can still do engineering subjects within your b.sci

Yes, correct, but you can do engineering subjects in undergrad, which is what he means.

You can do fluid mechanics, I have no idea if that's the same or different

Fluid Mechanics can be divided into fluid statics, fluid kinematics and fluid dynamics. Source: Wiki. I guess then you are allowed to do more general/introductory engineering subjects. If you do end up going on and completing the Master of Engineering, it is not actually a master degree though is it?
