Two breadth subjects in one semester?

Just wondering, in a Bachelor of Arts, is it possible to two breadth subjects in your first semester of your first year?

Awesome!
So just say I did 'Introduction to Mathematics' and 'Fundamental Physics' in first semester in Arts, I would be able to transfer to Science mid-year right?

You could apply yeah, it'd depend on your marks and ATAR to be successful. I guess you could do a part time semester if you don't want to have to do Arts subjects

Seeing as you may want to do Psychology, you could do two breadth subject and two Psychology subjects (a first year and second year if you're up for it) and then that should be a smooth transition into science (but please don't just take my word for it) if your ATAR is high enough :)

Edit: Was looking at 2011 - still an idea though.

But because it's not a full-time load, wouldn't that mean that your ATAR would hold even higher weighting?

Yeah but he wants to do arts because he doesn't have the maths prereq, not because he thinks he won't get a high enough ATAR

I don't think this is a wise idea, considering any arts subject will count towards breadth once he's in the science degree, nothing is wasted.

I meant if he's only doing Arts as a pathway to doing Science and has no desire to do their (bad) IDFs etc.
If you're happy to do arts subjects then yeah, credit them across and save yourself some time :)

They're "reinventing" IDFs now - called Arts Foundation subjects. You don't have to do it in first semester anymore. Only one within first year is compulsory. http://ba.unimelb.edu.au/about/arts-foundation-subjects.html

Thanks for all of the insight guys!
So yes, my plan is to try and get into Melbourne Arts then transfer to Science mid-year.
I'd do 'Introduction to Mathematics' and hopefully 'The Global Environment' (which leads into the Atmospheric Science major) as breadth. Then I'd do 'Science and Pseudoscience' as part of History and Philosophy of Science (which I'd like to continue doing as Science breadth). Then I'd like to do another Arts subject which can complement Science.

Well that's my aim. Now I just have to get the ATAR  :)

That's only for new enrollments right?  Got a friend in second year who transferred from LaTrobe doing five subjects this semester so she can do her second IDF - is it still necessary for her?  I think she'd rather drop it in the next two days if not.

I'm pretty sure she's exempt. The changes take effect next year I think so defs check with a student advisor to be sure. I know I am exempt at least - once I've finished Self and Other that's it - no more IDFs necessary.

Did you enroll this sem though?  She's been at Melbourne for one year now...hmm.  I will tell her about this.

Yeah I enrolled this semester and inadvertently found out about this when I was talking to an Arts advisor and trying to cram everything I wanted into my course. I think she's in with a good chance.
