I want to do Electrical/Mechanical Eng but also want to do just the single physics subject in third year namely astrophysics. But it requires Real analysis,Quantum Mech and Vector Calculus. The handbook isnt very clear on this issue but can one do Vector Calc and Eng maths?
a mate told me its fine if i do them in the same semester? true?

You can't do Vector Calculus then Engineering Maths.  But you can do Engineering Maths and then Vector Calculus.

Makes me laugh.

Doubt it.  Handbook specifically says:

Quote
Passing MAST20009 Vector Calculus precludes subsequent credit for MAST20029 Engineering Mathematics.

So if you pass Vector Calculus in 1 semester, then you can't get credit for Engineering Maths even if you do it in the same semester...  That's how I interpret it.

If you do vector calculus and real analysis you don't need to (and shouldn't want to waste time and money) do engineering maths.

Someone I know is doing both this semester so it can be done. Probably cos the handbook specifically has the word "subsequent" in there.
I think vector calc covers all (or most) of eng maths but eng maths definitely doesn't cover all of vector calculus - so they're not allowing you to take them in the order that will male life easy for you :)

Im going to major in one of the engineering systems which requires ENG maths.so yeah :/
I think the safer option would be eng maths then vector calc by the looks of it

"Note for BSc (new degree) students: This subject is intended only for students pursuing an Engineering Systems major, who do not wish to take any further study in Mathematics and Statistics or Physics. Other students, including those wanting to supplement their Engineering Systems major with further study in Mathematics and Statistics or Physics, should seek advice."

You should talk to course advisors, if you intend on doing more maths, then you won't need to do engineering maths.

I did vector calc (sem 1, 2010), then eng maths  (sem 2, 2010).

The entirety of Vector calc is covered as somewhere between 1/8 and 1/6 of eng maths.

Something is wrong. My friend tried to do that and he couldn't, was told he could only do Vector after eng maths.

If you are doing electrical, you ONLY need real analysis. If you are doing mechanical, and NOT doing eng maths, you will need BOTH vector calc and a third year differential equations subject.

hey i'm also a engineering student at UoM, I was wondering if you guys have enrolled for 2012 subjects yet? I'm trying to enrol for Engineering Mechanics but the subject doesn't appear when i search for it, is anyone else having this problem?

Have you tried doing blank searches? They usually give you every option so you could try look for it like that. And make sure you're trying to add the subject to the right slot.

What do people think about doing  4 sciences in one semester second year?  . Foundations of electrical networks,Vector Calc,Eng Maths,Quantium Mechanics and Special Relativity.
Would it be impossible or still manageable?. Need to do 4 sciences somwwhere if im too keep options of doing a physics subject in 3rd year which i really want to do. (Astrophysics)

I did 5 sciences and 1 arts last semester so I think it's definitely manageable.

In fact, if you do eng maths, you can pretty much wag Quantum Mechanics and Vector calc, since the material is veryyyy similar. After I did eng maths in summer, I did vect calc and quant mech in first semester--did not go to a single lecture. But before the exams, they were both very crammable as the maths was pretty much the same as the stuff you learnt in eng maths (I didn't go to any eng maths lectures either but that was cause it was summer and I wanted to enjoy my holidays :D)
