Hmm I got like 165 total or something on umat... got ripped by section two :(

I'm going for 98 atar + i do specialist maths.. would bump me to 'OP1'. Is it worth me applying to UQ? or should I just save my money??
It would depend on how passionate you are to do medicine. The people who REALLY want to do it, will go anywhere to do it - no matter the cost.

I am applying to everywhere in NSW, TAS , VIC (only monash zzzzz) and SA.

I REALLY want it, and will basically do anything - sell everything I own to pay for rent, etc etc.

I would just prefer to save the money and time if I am out of the range which UQ accepts.

What does 165 translate to in terms of percentiles?

73rd percentile :( I really wanted to get around 80-85.

Hmmmm considering that the lowest i heard getting into uq last year was 85, i think you might not make it....but defs try for james cook and hopefully you'll ace the interviews :)

The grad entry pathway ain't no walk in the path either. Everyone seems to be going for the BBiomed/MD route at Melb and the cut offs for both appear to be going up.

Unless you get a 99.90+, you are going to struggle to get in anywhere that uses UMAT.  Still apply definitely, but don't expect much, and if you get an offer, then you have to consider it.  I got 55 overall (52/43/69 - 73rd%ile) on UMAT 2010 and nowhere gave me an interview.

Your best chance is to go to JCU in Townsville or Griffith Gold Coast.  JCU is interview/ATAR only, whilst Griffith was ATAR only (99.65 was the cut off for last year).  But then you have to consider whether or not the move is worth it when you could stay here for an FFP at UMelb if your ATAR is 99+.

You have the whole summer to stress over such choices, I assure you...

hey man, would you have any idea what a competitive application to UNSW would need, given a UMAt of 92? I think I can probably get 99.75, is that enoguh? I think I am good at interviews, so im busting a gut to get one at monash, hopefully I can bump up my enter to 99.9, which will take a bit of luck as well.

92, is one of those umat scores that is low enough to have me quite worried.

I think you should be fine.  With 99.85 I think I needed 57 for an interview and had a 55, so you'd need to be pretty unlucky.

Careers counsellors are often quite clueless. I thought we've had plenty of people already disprove the 50-50-50 rule and say that it's just minimum 150? Minimum 150 never made sense to me though because that just essentially means minimum of 50 overall score, which is clearly way lower than what's required to get an interview anyway.

the 150 minimum i think applies to 99.95'ers

it means they still have to have that minimum score to be offered an interview

Theoretically, it applies to everyone. Given the demand, it applies to only 99.95ers.

I disagree, some options just aren't possible for some people and I don't think it says anything about their desire to study medicine. They also shouldn't feel less deserving because they don't want to travel etc.

Definately agree, I'm very reluctant to go interstate because financially I know that I won't be able to afford it, plus I have other plans of starting up a side business with my family and others here in Melbourne which I don't want to scrap :)
