networks help specifically cut method and dummy variable

could someone explain this to me. I just can't seem to understand both of them. Like why do u use dummy variables and are they counted as predecessors

i get the min cut=max flow thing, but ill admit the dummies never made sense to me either
i've done some prac exams though and it hasnt come up yet :D
