When the question is worded like it was, e.g. "For a group of 15-year-old students who regularly played computer games, the correlation between the time spent playing computer games and fitness level was found to be ...", does that imply that the first variable (time spent playing computer games) is the independent variable (x) and that the second variable (fitness levels) is the dependant variable (y)?

it does, but has no effect on the answer.

i know i dont know people keep looking into this question. knowing the iv or dv has no effect on the answer. the only information you need is r. this tells us that when one variable increases, the other decreases, and vice versa,REGARDLESS of which is IV and DV. this kind of question has appeared at least twice in past exams. the main thing it is testing is if you can eliminate the "causation" statements. ie if you play less games youll be fitter->wrong.

increased by 25% cause you need to go from .8 to 1, so you need to increase by 25% of .8

yes .8 is a percentage but all numbers are. that doesn't matter. increasing it by 20% (a fifth of 80 - 16) would make it .96
