I met Max Gillies at his son's Bar Mitzvah ceremony (3 others were graduating, including my friend), but I didn't know who he was then

I've heard mixed reviews about "Love Never Dies". Apparently, the set is amazing but the plot is all twisted and weird. In Britain reviewers dubbed it, "Paint Never Dries"

I saw it - it was EXACTLY as Panicmode described.  That, and the showstopper is the very first song.  Fail.

Thanks, don't think I'll end up seeing it now.

Have to say, my favourite musical is a fair toss up between Wicked and Les Miserables.

The showstopper is the first song? I'm not really looking forward to it as much now ;_; I mean, the cast sounds decent, but.

I saw Cats when it was in Melbourne recently. I did really like it, but I thought it was overrated. Mind you, in all honesty I think all Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals are overrated, when there's amazing musicals like Next To Normal which very few people have heard of haha.

NEXT TO NORMAL OHMYGOD SO MUCH LOVE ;_; Yeah, I'm not a big fan of Cats. I don't know about it being overrated, ahaha ease up he has some due right to that, but there are other amazing things out there. Next to Normal <3 That is actually stunning.

Haha I guess; I'm a tad outspoken when it comes to my opinion on matters related to musicals :P
Yes! Next to Normal is so brilliant! To be honest, I never got to see the Melbourne Theatre Company perform it, 'cause I only got into it JUST after they closed :( But I've listened to the soundtrack so many times... it's one of those musicals that I'll never get sick of (like Les Mis). 'I Am the One' is so so so so emotionally powerful IMO :)

Shamelessly plugging amateurish work, but: http://www.liveguide.com.au/News_and_Reviews/8/36495/Reviewed_Next_To_Normal got free tickets to review it for that site.

But hey, another musical fan, hurrah! I did get to see MTC perform it, as you'll see in the review =p I'd heard about it coming to Melbourne and you have NO CLUE how excited I was. The one thing that bothered me was Kate Kendall as Diana, a little bit, but she eased her way into it vocally. I think she was sick the night I was in though. But oh my god, I am never going to get sick of N2N or Les Mis. I dislike the people who get bothered at some portrayals of Eponine as jerking around during 'A Little Fall of Rain'. I'm like, she's dying. She's going to react to the pain, if she can feel it.

But 'I Am The One', oh my god, I can't even. That scene is so incredibly powerful, depending upon the appearance of Gabe. Have you seen the Tony performance of it? Having him just sit there, and have him just be there in scenes is really interesting.  And, plus, Aaron Tveit, Alice Ripley, J Spence, Jen Damiano. Could you be much happier? I just love how it unfolds.

IMHO MTC's production was well done, especially Bert La Bonte/Dr Fine, e.t.c. Christy Sullivan who played Natalie was stunning vocally, but her tonal quality was VERY different in the second act, which just threw me off completely. Their set is gorgeous though. Huge and close, and the cast manage really well so much so you wouldn't realise how few of them there really are.

'Maybe/Next to Normal' staged, without a doubt, gets me everytime. You have to see it live and in person next time Jarryd oh my god <33 So much. What others do you like?

Haha wow Vivj, I had a glance of your review; it was very sincere and well written :)
I totally agree with what you say about Eponine! Peoples' opinion on her different actors' characterisation seem to always be divided. Totally unrelated, but I actually read the ~1200 page novel of Les Mis in Year 10, which really opened my eyes to the way the characters were portrayed :)

Oh my, I really wish I could have seen Next To Normal! The Tony Award performance was what got me into it in the first place. It is so compelling; as you said, with Gabe's positioning within the scene.

I know, I am so desperate to see the musical! I could never appreciate it as much as you until I do! I can only imagine the raw emotional power of Maybe/Next to Normal, as I can only listen to it now...

I think this will be my next chance to see it though! http://www.theatrepeople.com.au/newsflash/wmtc-inc-announce-next-normal-2012
I will not pass it up for the world!

And other musicals I really love are Doctor Zhivago (which I saw on stage with Anthony Warlow), Jekyll and Hyde, In the Heights, Miss Saigon, Wicked and Martin Guerre. They're just a few I've grown to love :)

Also, my favourite musical of all time is Chess, which puts me in about 0.0001% of the musical theatre population.  :p

I saw half of a recording of a Chess performance before. It was pretty cool from what I saw of it, I never got to see the end half though :(

Sorry to revive an old thread, but you might be interested that Chess is coming to Melbourne in August.

Did anyone get around to watching the Tonys on Sunday? It's always hard to tell if you've only seen bootleg performances but I personally felt Newsies probably was a little hard done by, and Once a bit lucky.
