smiley

say we have two further classes at a school
they do the same sacs
for simplicity lets just say theres 4 kids in each class
marks for the year is as follows, out of 100:
class 1: 100, 90, 88, 87
class 2: 50,40,1,1

is the guy who got 50 on his SAC's going to be ranked 1?

No, your ranked in a cohort, not a class.

What is a cohort?
Everyone at your school who is doing that subject, regardless of which class they belong to.

Pretty sure your class=cohort

I mean let's say for business management there are 2 classes and one class gets their SACs assessed very thoroughly while the other is assessed easily. It won't be fair if the students in those two completely different class is compared and ranked with each other.

The teachers are supposed to cross-mark samples of each other's sacs so that there is consistency in marking across the whole cohort. This does not entirely rule out any advantage that one class may have because of the teacher's skills, interests, knowledge, etc

No, Bozo is 100% right, I've spoken to the VASS person at my school, he's a great guy, and he explained how the SACs work and how they're moderated...etc.
You're ranked within your whole school, everybody who does that subject

Is it true that teachers only send student ranking to VCAA instead of statistical information regarding your results?

And yes, cohort refers to ALL of the students in your school doing that class. 100% sure. It's a shame when teachers are supposed to cross mark and it's ultimately discovered that they don't:

Student 1: When are we getting our sacs back?
Teacher 1: They are being moderated by the subject department on Thursday.
Student 1: But Student 2 said his class has his result back already!
Teacher 1: Umm...

VCAA uses the actual results for each of the sacs for every student to calculate the 34% that is attributed to school based assessment in the study score.

k say i got 96/100 for the year and there were a few people who got 97-100%, say 5
does this mean im ranked 5 outright or do they recognise that it's stupidly close
is 49-50 still possible considering i got 100% on exam 1 and i get the same result today?

You'll have to hope that the five guys above you got 100% or close to 100% on both exams to get ur SACs moderated to 100/100. Hmm to get a 50...if you ace both exams and ur SACs get moderated up to 98-99 you could still get 50...
