Is there any difference between a transition matrices question with a formula (Dn+1 and Dn-1)????????????????????????

Not entirely. I'm just confused as to why there are some types of questions with n+1 and n-1. I understand the logic behind squaring a mtrix to get the next following matrice, but just not that rule.
