How do design elements improve the effectiveness of a site?

Like proportion, consistency, colour and contrast; how do they all improve effectiveness?  when i think of effectiveness i think of accuracy, clarity and so on, get on it laseredd :P

Something like:
Consistency = the user will be familiar if the site is designed consistently, making the site more effective since they can use it better
Proportion = makes headings bigger and stuff, organises the data better, making the site more effective since data can be found easier
Clarity = easy to read = easier to use site to find information

You should get the idea now. Making the site easier to use and stuff makes the site more effective.
