Hey there,

Just wondering if anyone can better describe what is meant and what is the difference between the final two steps of kotters, Building on change and Instutionalizing the change seems to be the same thing to me.

Thanks in advance

Step 7 - Consolidate improvements:

As the change process proceeds, assemble to the benefits attained into the organisation's operating procedures and systems. After doing so, modify existing policies that no long match the change systems.

Step 8 - Institutionalize the changes:

As the final stage in the change process, make a clear statement to show the connections between the new procedures and the success of the organisation. This closes the loop of the change process and provides a positive experience from which further changes can be initiated.

the second last step of bulid on the change, refers to basically once achieving a goal one shouldnt just not continue life now, one should enforce more and more change aspects to do better.
the last step refers to the change now being accustom among a society over a period, not a change anymore but a way of life- a norm

I understand the last step, but i still don't understand the 7th step. How exactly can one build on change? I usually just write that step seven involves the organisation building on change, by evaluating the changes already made, and by improving on the changes made, or changing other things within the organisation. But to me it doesnt sound right.

Evaluation is done in the 8th step. The 7th involves supporting the change with resources. This can be changing old structures or practices, retraining staff or purchasing new technology.

Well for my change issue, i am doing social responsibility. And the organisation i am doing is NAB which implemented a Volunteer Leave Program. How would resources help to support that change. I would think evaluating it would help them to build on change or consolidate with improvements; as they could introduce further socially responsible practices.

I have no idea... I'm doing Toyota so it's a manufacturing organisation. That makes the whole resources thing a lot easier...

I think i'll just go with the evaluating thing. To be quite honest i dont really care. I am so sick of business management and change theories!
