So basically the only reason the ATAR for biomed is much higher than science is because of popularity yes?
I'm looking at either of those two courses and I'm going to put biomed as first preference just because it seems more focused in the medical field.
I'm not really certain on how uni scoring works, but let's say two people got the exact same scores in every subject except one was doing science and one biomed. Would the biomed get preference on a  post-graduate course because they achieved the higher ATAR for VCE? I want to to Doctor of Dental Surgery at Melbourne and am wondering if it really makes any difference and if our ATAR plays a role in entering post-grad courses..  thanks :)

The answer the uni would give you would be no, doing biomed gives you no advantage for selection into post grad degrees.  Whether that is actually true or not is another story.  It is in the best interests of the uni for a decent amount of biomed students to be admitted into the MD/DDS etc., because then it justifies their model...

Yeah, I doubt you would get the same GPA, because they have quite a complicated process of calculating them. There's also the matter of GAMSAT. And no, ATAR is not considered at all.

The biomed kid will be guaranteed a CSP spot if he gets 99.90+ and a FFP if he gets 99.00+. Otherwise the ATAR will not be considered in the post grad application.

Mmm, don't major in physiology :S

Also, do biomedicine and look down on those poor people in a BSc

What a terrible high quality post :P

Anyone is guaranteed that (as long as they're doing their undergrad in melbourne), not just biomed.

Completely anecdotally, I did notice a large number of people I know ending up in metro1 but whether that's due to bias or random chance I can't say. I also noticed someone with terrible interview scores at USyd completely reverse them for UoM and get a CSP/metro1.

The clinical zone you'll be allocated to. Metro1 is RMH, St Vincents and the Austin (inner city, close to uni etc.). Metro2 is Sunshine, Epping and...another one I forget.

Vast majority of people preference metro1 before metro2

Yes, as are physics and statistics which are also quite mathematical. None of these are compulsory in science. Biomed has a much more rigid structure, there are compulsory subjects in every semester of your degree.

This should help with figuring out the compulsory subjects:

Compare with,

2011-'13: Bachelor of Biomedicine [Neuroscience Major] at Melbourne Uni

Nobody knows since the subject is completely new. But I'm assuming it would be more difficult than maths methods since it's university level mathematics. Just keep up and do all the work and you'll be fine.
