To anybody starting at Monash today or in the next week:

Please, please don't be too discouraged if you don't love your first day, or week, or semester. Starting uni can be hard, what with the new environment and new people. Basically everybody is in the same boat as you; if your peers seem more confident or as though they're totally on top of everything, they're probably just good actors.

Everybody at uni is learning. This will be my fourth year at Monash and I still don't know where a lot of shit is, so don't be afraid to ask. People are nice.

I was really close to dropping out of uni in my first semester, because I absolutely hated it. But with time, you grow to love it, and now I honestly, truly don't want to leave. Just yesterday I was considering my options for next year and beyond in such a way that could maximise my time at Monash.

Uni is fucking sick because you can study whatever you want to study. You will have classes with people who have similar interests to you, and with people who share your passions.

Some general advice:
- Try to get your hands on a campus map, or download the Monash University app (I think this works; I've never actually done it).
- If you don't know where to go or where you're meant to be, ask somebody. There is absolute no shame in it.
- Making friends can be hard at first. If you don't know anybody, join some clubs, consider some camps, go to some events.
- If you are really struggling, Monash offers a heap of services to first-year students. Ask Monash, your faculty, or post in this thread, and somebody will guide you.
- Don't try to push the revolving doors in Menzies; they're automatic.

tl;dr: Uni might be grouse at first, uni might be shit at first. Regardless, you will most likely grow to absolutely love it. I wish you all the very best, and feel free to message me or ask somebody here if you're unsure. :)
100% seconded.

I'll also be in on Wednesday for a couple hours if anybody needs a hand or would just like a friendly face :)

In all seriousness, I'm sure someone will help. I guess you'll have to ask someone on campus if you can't get an answer here.

Didn't get a single first preference for allocations :( . What's there to do with a 2 hour gap around Monash Clayton?

Psh...2 hour gap? I've got an hour math lecture at 9am, then a 7 hour break, then an hour lecture for mobile apps. I've got a 5 hour break on Tuesdays...

Yeah...good idea! But...I want to like have that uni life that all the speakers were talking about, so I might actually go to them. 7 hours is a bit long though...

I barely went to a single lecture in my first year, and I don't think I've missed one in my last two, so I've sort of experienced both sides of the coin.

Seven hours is intense. I'd totally listen to one of them online if possible.

In the top right corner of allocate+ there should be a 'help' option. go there and fill out the form and they should fix it for you. if they don't, either call up your faculty or email the relevant unit coordinator of the unit which needs to be changed to remove the clash.

also, if you have lecture's clashing, and one is being recorded you can always watch the recording of one later and save on hours you have to be at uni.

strange. I did first year crim last year and it never came up. maybe Jarret's just being nice and offering classes on how to find a girlfriend to decrease loneliness among first years?

2 hr breaks are pretty standard, I actually prefer one 2 hour break over two 1 hour breaks. you could just go to a club, meet with friends, study, have lunch, go to the toilet etc. there's lot of things to do.

There's really no difference in experience between watching a lecture in person and online to be honest. the 'uni life' thing people talk about is mainly in tutes and spare time. but whatever works for you is best.

Can I do it without losing any % of my final score for not showing up? Participation or whatever? To be honest, If there are people in my class i talk to and stuff, I might just go, but if I'm always alone, I might do what you did.

Very few units I've completed have actually required lecture attendance (the ones that have have all been Linguistics units). Check the unit guide, but I don't think it will be an issue.

Does anyone here take the train home after 4-5pm? For those who do, is it difficult to get a seat (talking from Huntingdale to the CBD mainly).

Edit: This is my first year at monash as a PG student, used to only living 5-10 minutes away from my previous uni so i'm not used to the train commute. What about those who have blue permits, how difficult is it to get a car space?
