What actually happens in these "compulsory" oweek sessions? Sounds really lame tbh..

Just information about it all really. It's nothing a decently clued in student cant find in the handbooks, by asking the faculty or in the case of lounges, just by being at university long enough. Idk if its changed but you basically just sit in a lecture theater while someone talks and you listen. Not necessary at all but if you're already going to be there, i guess there are worse ways to spend your time than going.

Thinking of organising an AN Monash meetup. It's happened once before and that time was really awkward cause we all stood around. It'd definitely need some kind of larger goal or activity around it if it does happen...

MAD (debating) and Chess Club are both free with MSA, and include pizza nights and such.
Disney society is pretty good if you like Disney and can make it to the free (!!) screenings.
MSS, Biomed, SAS and MESS are the "big 4" party societies if you like the club (doof doof) environment.
Board games is a really chill club, with sessions every Monday from 5-onwards. Only $2 with MSA.
I've also heard good things about the philosophy club, but don't know too much myself.

(also MASS^3 if you're in advanced sci, I hear the events coordinator is super hot, hip and cool. ;) )

I reckon the best thing would be to look through the list of clubs (which can be found by googling "Monash clubs"). Keep in mind the sport clubs are listed on a different site, this includes things like dance, yoga (cant remember if we still do this), martial arts, etc.

Like every first year, you'll probably enthusiastically join 10 and never show up again. But that's all part of being a first year hey, so go nuts.

Regarding board-game club, they literally just sit in a room and play board games.

If you do join clubs, please buy an MSA membership. It'll give you $5 off every club you join. It's not just that but it has a whole range of other discounts and more importantly, you support the student union.

So whats in the showbag guys?

It's fantastic!!

Usual stuff - Subway vouchers, wall planner for the year, other things I care less about, clubs guide (although one was lacking in mine, possibly because I bought it early?) and a box of tea.

I haven't gotten any showbags from a club, though - haven't joined any that gives them out.

I haven't been on campus at all (still overseas until march).

How do I get a MSA membership? And how do I join clubs - just rock up or shoot them an email?

EDIT:
Also, there's no harm in borrowing - rather than buying - textbooks right? If so, will the library likely still have copies in early week one (when I'm back?)

Head up to the MSA help-desk once uni starts (first floor of campus centre IIRC, near the airport lounge) and you can purchase membership there.

Well, the thing with borrowing library copies of textbooks is that much of the time, current-edition textbooks are either non-borrowable (as they want to keep them in the library for people to reference as needed) or borrowable for only one night etc. etc.

If it's a textbook you think you will use a lot, it might be best (unless you like heading into the library every day) to consider purchasing the book. You can use booko.com.au to compare book prices across sites.

Bit of a Jaffy question here... but uh, I don't really want late classes and the seminar I have late (5-7pm) I wish to move up. My issue is that if I were to do to that I'd have a lecture, then a lab, then another lab and finally a tutorial all in a row, no breaks. From what I gathered, I'd have ten minutes to come from one lab to the second lab, which is a few buildings down, and sort of have an on-the-go lunch. The million dollar question is: is this just a stupid idea to begin with (to avoid the late class - transport reasons) or should I actually do this? What are your opinions?

EDIT: The 2nd lab is currently clashing with the desired seminar. That 2nd lab would be right after my 1st lab if I were to take that seminar I want.

See level 1 of Campus Centre to be exact for MSA membership. Register partially (and pay - though optional) online if you'd like to speed things up and just pick it up.

Well its always a balancing act. If you really hate the late classes that much you'll just have to stick it out and deal with it. Thats a lot of things to have in one day though but i suppose you'll have them either way. If you're dying for a break, well, you'll just have to accept getting home later. As far as i can tell from your post, you'll still have like 3 things in a row regardless of what you do? In that case i would probably just take the 4th as well so you can get home when you want.

Hey guys, sorry a small but important part of my previous post wasn't answered:

I haven't been on campus at all (still overseas until march).

How do I get a MSA membership? And how do I join clubs - just rock up or shoot them an email?

EDIT:
Also, there's no harm in borrowing - rather than buying - textbooks right? If so, will the library likely still have copies in early week one (when I'm back?)
Are there any official activities/events after Orientation (I heard somewhere about Clubs Week?) that we can join clubs? I don't want to be the awkward guy who turns up first session without having signed up...

Cheers!

Hope that at least one of them is recorded.

You can also try crying to the unit coordinator.

Yeah one of them is recorded apparently but my mum went into a fit talking about wasting uni fees and bad arrangements blah blah blah.
