Hey, I am arriving back in Melbourne on Saturday; can I create an ID card on Saturday - are there any places open? The website says the only place I can get an ID card is through Monash Connect (which I presume isn't open during weekends); so I need to wait till Monday?

If I have to wait till Monday, I presume I have to pay full fare travel (since I don't have a concession card yet?). I can only travel on Concession once I have my ID card right?

You do need someone from the uni to stamp your form, and if you get your id card they prefill the majority of the form out with you (you have to request it in my.monash, it was virtually instant for me) so you're probably better off waiting until connect opens (which I assume is monday but i don't know for sure). You will also need to take the form to a premium train station to get it filled out, so you could either borrow someone's full fare myki for the day and travel on that or ask someone for a ride i guess. I got my conc card at gw train station, which you can get to from uni via the... 742 i think.

Hi,

Is there any way to change your name on the official student records at Monash?

I want to change my Chinese name to my preferred English name (which I am known as). I checked ask.monash, they said I needed supporting legal documents but all my legal documents have my name in my Chinese name....

Any solutions?
Thanks!

I had a lot of international student friends/lab partners, most of them i believed used their actual name when it was necessary. It's really only necessary to stick on your exams and top of assignments, even then, your student number is usually enough. You can usually tell the lecturers/tutors which names you prefer and they'll call you by that. It might be a bit hard to get it formally changed though with all the ID requirements they have.

Is it a common practice to not get textbooks until 2 weeks into classes? If so, how do I access set reading materials?

Common practice not to get them at all. Either they'll be scanned and uploaded on moodle or you can simply get the book from the library. The long term borrowable ones will probably be already checked out. You're still welcome to sit in the reference section and use the short term ones. You could also just simply find the eBook.

Wrong. Your Monash ID card is totally different from a student concession card. Everyone in the state gets a concession card that looks the same, even highschool students. You cannot use your student ID for concession purposes, you do not need it for this either. On WES, you will find a pre-filled student concession form application. You need to have this printed in colour and take it to a train station with staff. Pay the fee, they'll cut it out and laminate it into a card.

Is it essential to buy the Unit Reader? If so, what if I buy an outdated version - i.e. the one from Sem 2, 2014 second hand? How much do they cost generally?

How do we know if we need a Unit Reader? Do they appear on the booklist thing in mymonash? There is a 'custom publication' for ATS1281 appearing on my booklist, are they the unit readers?

Usually we'll tell you textbooks aren't essential but something like this. It cant be found online. It's custom made. You cant buy it anywhere else. The readings in it are expected to be something you do every week. I would wager to say the readings wouldn't change much, my Indian philosophy reader has a foreword from 1993 (hah!). It varies based on the subject area though. It might be best to ask the tutor or compare it to a newer one (take pictures of the index or something).

Further on the Myki point, here are the cards you'll encounter. You need the one at the top. It will probably not be red this year but the rest stays the same. In-case you're wondering, that's my actual face. I'm a little self conscious about how hairy i am. Say hi if you see me around campus. Your photo will be the same as your Monash ID photo. Mine is different because my ID expired during the year and they offered to take a new photo while they were at it.

Haven't even started and already considering that? Man you're already like a 3rd year.

If you have a car, thats a good option. If not, the upper levels of the Matherson library, on the desks. Don't be inconsiderate if people seem like they need them though.

People seem to sleep everywhere on uni, that's just how it goes. If it's not too freezing, you can even find people sleeping on the lawns.

ohhhh boy, my favourite topic!

- All libraries
- Med tute rooms in buildings 13 and 15
- Building 15 foyers on the first and second floor
- South 1 foyer
- Building 17 ground-floor foyer
- Various nooks and crannies around the upper Menzies building
- (If warm and sunny) the Med garden
- The tiny garden next to the administration buildings
- Maths building ground floor
- Religious centre, Narthex Room (fantastic couches, though likely to be booked)
- Robert Blackwood Hall foyer
- Your car, if you drive (don't forget to open a window a bit!)
- On-res friends' rooms while they're in class
- Foyer of the building containing lecture theatres S1-4
- Tons of places around the eng buildings (especially if you're an eng student and are willing to sleep in their computer labs after hours)
- Upper halls of Rotunda (dusty and unpleasant but also quiet and dark)

And plenty more places! Take the time to explore in your first couple of weeks.

(Oh and be prepared for people to post photos of you sleeping in public on Stalkerspace)

I must be very lucky because I can't fathom being so tired that you'd actually sleep in a place as public as a university. Still, these posts are great if you substitute "good, quiet study area" for "good, quiet sleeping area".

I generally find HAL quieter than Matheson. Where in HAL did you explore? Did you try going down the stairs instead of up them?

A lot of HAL is noisy because of its designated group study/open plan design. However, there are some really really quite places on the lower level as well as the enforced 'quiet study area' on the main floor near the cartography section.

That's never the case at uni :P Though the upper levels of the law library are up there amongst the quietest spots.
