Can we all agree the stress-address system is the stupidest thing eva #thanksmonash (sorry I have a vendetta and it's become personal)

Best Freudian slip ever hahahaha

I don't mind the system all that much but I do think it's moronic to use it in the timetabling system etc. Like, I know what and where Building 64 is, but I would have no fucking idea where "43 Rainforest Walk" would be. Just put the building name in ffs Monash.

Seemingly arbitrary numbers have been replaced with essentially arbitrary names. Just as hard for new students, and harder for existing ones.

There actually is a system in place.
Neither system numbered the buildings arbitrarily, this one just makes more sense in the long run, whilst the old system made more sense in the short term.

Thing is, once I know which building number is which, I know it for good. Now I'm supposed to remember either 1) a longer numerical/alphabetical combination for each building or 2) be able to quantify weird, arbitrary addresses for these buildings which involves being able to locate these buildings relative to weird, arbitrary street names that no-one is going to use anyway.

It's classic Monash really lol, why do anything the easy/logical way when you can make things seem fancy?

It doesn't even make any fucking sense in term of street addresses. Why doesn't each "street" start at one?
  • Rainforest Walk starts at 5
  • Sports Walk has no addresses for its majority, then goes 21, 24, 26, 27, 28. U WOT M8?
  • Chancellors Walk goes 10, 11, 20, 21, 27. This is not how streets work Monash, a kindergarten student could tell you that.

I have no idea what they were even trying to do with this system lol

I love the variety in the names too

College Walk
Rainforest Walk
Sports Walk
Chancellor's Walk
Innovation Walk
Exhibition Walk

6/10 are "Walks", and none of them have interesting or historical names... it's not like Monash is lacking in significant historical figures lol (like, y'know, Sir John Monash...), they could literally not be any more boring in picking these names

I wasn't aware of this. How do the systems number the buildings?

The old system was done chronologically - once a building was made, it was given the next number in the list. Hence why the lower numbers were really close together, but the larger numbers tended to be really far a part (they ran out of blocks of space)

As for the new system:

Quote
All addresses are on a primary pedestrian walk. Numbering ascends from north to south and west to east, as per best practice town planning convention. Odd numbers are located to the west and north of the walks.

I'm pretty sure the "random"ness in the number spacing is in distance, so other buildings can still be placed between and before without having to re-address the buildings already in place.

Although, I do agree that the actual names suck. :P

Menzies will aways be building 11 for me. Ditto 28/29 for maths, 64 for the big lecture theatre near the bus loop, and 8 for the Rotunda.

I stepped foot into the Hargrave-Andrew library (or the other way around, whatever) on the hunt for quiet study spaces. Omg, this library was so loud :o
Wtf happened to library = quietest places on earth ?!

As I said in my Jaffy guide, the libraries are actually some of the more noisy places on campus. The very far reaches of the backs of HAL are alright, the rest is pretty noisy.

Will there be tutes in the first week?

More unusual for first year units. Less unusual for later year units, i know every single one of my units has a lab/tutorial this week. It'll be said in the first lecture, on moodle/in an email or on your timetable. Hopefully, at least one of these will inform you.

Do people generally go to campus on days when they don't have classes/tutes?

I have Monday and Wednesdays off and am tempted to stay at home and chill but I think there may be a better way to spend my time? :P

What is there to do on campus when there's nothing to do?

Depends. I'd wager most students don't, especially as you get older/more into your degree.

Days off are glorious, you dont have to put on pants. In particular, if you live 2 hours (one way!) like me, you are not going in just for shits and giggles. I suggest you stay home. If you find yourself falling behind in lectures or work, maybe make one a designated study day to go in and hit the library.

some units have lecture attendance as a hurdle. I think that's the case for most of arts units. We don't have such thing in engineering and science. In fact I didn't go to half my lectures last semester (not recommended)

ps: maybe that's tute attendance..whoops :D

Nah, it's tute attendance. You cant miss more than 2-3 without failing in a lot of units. I've never been in an arts lecture that needs attendance. One wasn't recorded though, so, i did have to attend as a psueo-requirement (otherwise id just never hear the lecture).

Menzies will aways be building 11 for me.

I actually never realised that Menzies or Campus Centre had building numbers until open day last year, when people asked for buildings 11 and 10 and I had to direct them there.

The funny bit being, I had lectures in Menzies, and it never hit me that my timetable had a building number there. xD

The new system is shit. You have to remember two pieces of information instead of one. Street name and number Vs Building number.

Although, apparently, the numbers are aligned. So, 53 rainforest walk is directly under 53 chancellors walk. It's somewhat easier if you know what vertical level you're on i suppose.
