Does anyone know how long the maths units continue for in a science/eng double? I don't intend to major or minor in maths and am looking to do the minimum that is core. This semester was 1035 and next is 2010 but I've since discovered the eng1060 unit is basically all maths too. I don't mind maths really, but as a Jaffy who is used to the simple nature of spesh and methods, I can't stand the ambiguity of maths here!

Have STA1010 exam on Monday - my current strategy is to try and memorise (the methods) in the 2012 exam paper. Will update everyone with how badly this goes.

1035 is an incredibly hard unit - I still think it's the hardest I've done. Sure, the maths I'm doing now is objectively harder, but 1035 is a massive jump in what you're used to, and so comparatively it'll be harder.

In eng/sci, you have to minor in maths - no objections. But, don't be scared based on 1035 (or even 1030) - I reckon you'll find 2010 much more up your alley, and 2021 is also a really good unit (the other two units you have to do are that and 2032). I've also heard really good things about 1060 from people who hated 1030.

I think you'll breeze through MTH2010 and MTH2032 given your previous scores. You might find MTH2021 a bit annoying as it's a bit more "proofy" but all in all with a bit of work it isn't too difficult.

ENG1060 isn't extremely mathsy, it's more on the programming side relating to mathematical concepts. Put a bit of work into the labs and assignment (collate with friends for best results :P) and you'll be fine because I would not say the exam is difficult, in fact most people seem to find it quite easy comapred to the in-semester tasks.

The papers don't change much by year and you should be fine, but the more exams you do the better off you'll be. Speaking of which, check your emails for the address associated with your AN account, I've left a present for you.

Edit: Apparently it didn't send last night, but it should've gone through now.

So

I'm kinda annoyed at myself and Monash. My whole degree has just been me going through the motions of choosing units that help me finish my chosen major and trying to be strategic and finish my majors asap. And now I'm in my final year, 4th year of a 3 year degree, but I'm left with all my elective units. Except all these units I expected to do as electives, that really interest me are no longer offered. Fuck my life.

I feel like whilst everything is so structured, it's either not structured enough or its so structured you're fucked if you deviate.

So yeah, now I'm at such a crossroads at what to pick for my final semester. And it's interesting that I could not care less about what is easy, I only care about what interests me, mostly because I know that's what works for me.

Welp, what do you find interesting? Assuming you find your major interesting, is there any units left in the major that you could do? Did you get a minor that you found interesting and can do more units of?

Otherwise, I'd suggest the usual MTH2132 which is, in general, an interesting unit (think all the cool things of maths like the golden ratio and fibbonaci numbers and mobius strips without all the "annoying" stuff from high school), and after that I run at a full stop because I only know easy units, not necessarily interesting units...

Ahahah, shoulda clarified, I'm an Arts student. Dont get me wrong, my degree has been interesting, it's the only reason I'm doing it. But I just wish I did more units related to terrorism, war, history, middle east etc. There have just been relevant specific units that are no longer running, like Washington and World Politics.

My majors are International Studies and Environment, Society and Sustainability. Again, really interesting.

I guess maybe I'm just having a rethink of majors/minors as I would have been able to do those units if I had chosen Politics rather than IS.

sigh #thirdworldproblems

Anyway people, lesson from this is a. plan your degree in advance and b. chose your major/minors very carefully

Possible to have a look at those units as your electives - the terrorism/war/history/middle-east? Unless they are the units that have been discontinued?

This is exactly the problem, lol. You skim read, didn't you? :P

SBC, I reckon just spend an hour looking through the Arts unit guide to see if there's anything left that interests you. I was in a similar situation with two spare electives because of cancelled units, so I ended up taking a translation unit and Chinese 1.

If you want to branch out beyond Arts, there's a level one business law unit offered by BusEco that has a lot of stuff that is generally helpful to know. Good foundational law knowledge to help you win at life. Stuff like types of legal entities, consumer rights, negligence, contracts. It's not easy, but it's all writing, so maybe good for you as an arts student?

... I mean, I could. But do you really want to do that? Past unit guides are pretty similar anyway, if you look those up.

Anyway, not really any prescribed readings... There are 2 text books, but neither are prescribed, and only barely relate to the unit (Beginners Guide to Winning the Nobel Prize: Life in Science Updated edition and Great Feuds in Science: Ten of the Liveliest Disputes Ever). Plus, the unit guide/workbook don't really say much for the lecture content, just for what's done in workshops (i.e., mainly relating to the lit review)

Cheers EuleurFan101! Is the exam based on readings or more on lecture content?

Can you please suggest an easy level 1 maths unit to choose as an elective. Done VCE maths methods and like maths. Did stats FIT1006 in Sem 1. Thanks.

Erm... All that's really left for you (in terms of first year maths) is MTH1020

A query about scholarships; if my scholarship is terminated due to not meeting the required academic standards (75%), do I have to repay what I have already received, or is this just some myth people are telling me to pick my game up?
