My first 5 min at monash and i already got into an argument with other students *_*

>Get to campus
>gets approached by a socialist? i have never seen an anti-capitalist before so i thought why not, 5 min talking to these people cant hurt
>they start talking about how bad capitalism is
>they ask what subjects did i do
>i reply 'i did history revolutions.. so i saw how shit communism is"

Maybe ill keep my mouth shut next time

There's a few things you should know.

SA (Socialist Alternative) people are historically dumb. In first year, similarly minded to you having come out of Revs, my mates and I decided to quiz the person who approached us. We asked a few questions like who wrote 1905 and he was blank. Was pretty funny. Back in the day there was a Marxist club but the Marxists and SA's were pretty integrated so same shit really.

They are deregistered by Clubs and Societies but pop up because they (as in it's members and it's Monash student politics affiliate) keep getting seats on the MSC, generally through the environment and social justice or w/e department, so they pretty much have similar privileges.

They have good causes that they support but they just go about it in stupid, and insulting ways.

Having said this, dont ever sign up for ANYTHING. If they get your phone number they keep calling you to sign you up to the red flag and other shit.

They say stupid shit. Yasemin (the girl with tanned skin) never seems to graduate. She was around in my first year interrupting lectures to yell out about refugees and Palestine, and she was around in my final year to compare a bogan themed party as being similarly offensive as a genocide themed party?????????????????? She's like their leader in chief.

tl;dr avoid them like the plague

EDIT: removed the repetitive use of the word shit. I can't help it. They are pretty shitty. good lolz though

Wow lol.. sounds like some intense shit. I told my history teacher (who happened to be a journalist in the latter stages of the soviet-afghan war) my encounter with them and he tells me 'back in my day it was legal to shoot them' lmao but yeah all i been hearing is to stay away from them, i actually find all this funny  ::)

Has anyone here done EAE1011 and EAE1022? Planning on taking them since I'm interested in the atmospheric science major. I asked about them at my course information session and they didn't seem too appealing, but I wanted check out someone else's view on them.

Hi guys,

I just enrolled my first year units for my Eng/Comm degree and I was wondering when I can expect to receive a fee statement through WES (so that I can pay upfront ASAP)

Cheers

Two things, where does one go to buy second hand uni books, preferably from monash students.
Also, anyone else's booklist stuffed? On my monash it seems like it only shows the books needed for second semester, unless I don't need any for first sem?

Why exactly do you even want to pay upfront? HECS is an interest free loan, surely you would have more pressing things to save money for?

You can go on the Monash marketplace through mymonash to buy second hand books. My booklist is also only showing second semester books for some reason.

On my.monash in the 'quick links' section to the left of home screen there is a 'Monash marketplace'. I've used it a couple of times for books and it's been fantastic. There is also 'Monash sell your space' Facebook group (unaffiliated to uni) and various unaffiliated faculty student groups such as 'Monash law' for law students on fb. Both groups I have used. Best to meet somewhere busy on campus imo with people on the Facebook groups -I've met a couple ground floor Menzies.

The book lists for sem 1 are not available. Right now it is showing sem 2 2015 units. It will update sometime in February. You could email unit coordinators asking what books you need if you want - though they might not know for sure yet.

They may not be a domestic student or just have really nice parents ?

I never realised HECS was interest free. I also thought it was charged at federal bond rate. It's pretty generous that it's interest free lol. And you only pay back 2% of your income over 50k. Ridiculously cheap - I can see why the government wants to alter it.

True, I never did factor in the possibility of being an international student.

And yeah, HECS is AMAZING. Especially when you compare it to the ludicrous system in the USA. It's a great scheme.

Yeah, but since HECS is an interest free loan it should be your lowest priority pretty much. The discount of 10% on HECS that you get by paying upfront would likely be outdone simply by parking the money into a savings account for a few years.

Besides, most uni students have plenty of expenses (rent, car, bills, books, other debt that bears interest etc) that in 99% of cases it makes logical sense to postpone your HECS debt in favour of other expenses.

But of course, if you're rich enough that you don't really care, then go ahead :P.

On a sidenote, have u heard of the student start-up loan replacing the student start-up scholarship? Im wondering if its worth it. Does anyone know if thats on interest? I know u can pay it back like HECs but i have no clue on the interest rates

Hey extremeftw,

I'm a permanent resident atm and will probably only become a citizen later this year, so I'm not eligible for HECS haha
Makes saving up for things all the more fun

Ahh that sucks man. I wish you all the best because I know how hard it would be if I had to pay my fees upfront! Best of luck with becoming a citizen :).

Any ideas on what area or major you wanna do in Commerce? I would definitely spend the first semester doing units where your interests are, it will make the initial transition to uni much more bearable.
