I would absolutely despise having a night exam. I'd prefer an exam at 5am.

I don't mind it for the same reasons as you, but I think it's a pain for people who live far away, especially if they may have an exam the next morning or something too.
Yeah it'd suck balls coming home from an exam at like 10 at night

Then again you could just walk to revs afterwards and party until your next exam

How's the parking situation on campus going ? I got offered a permit today and I've got 3 days to decide whether or not to accept it.

I bought a half yearly one as a safeguard because I drive on Mondays (since I start at 8am, will always get a carpark), and just incase the trains get delayed for whatever reason. (Yes, I am aware that I wasted $200 because there's barely anyone there at that time... You learn from your mistakes I guess)

By the time I leave on Mondays around 11am, it's packed (not a single car space, talking about SE blue permit carpark).

I noticed though that there's an off campus parking area for permits on Normanby Road just as you exit Monash to the north - there were spaces there (if off campus is your thing...)

I definitely won't be renewing the permit mid-year though. Using PT is just so simple, even though it takes me double the time to get to uni (~ 90min) since I have to take two trains and the shuttle. I honestly wouldn't bother with the permit unless your current commute is hell.

Wait...so they oversell the permits? That can't be right...

I'm going to assume you're being sarcastic :P

Given that they started putting people on a waiting list, then decide mid-way through the first week to give another 1,000 people permits (everyone got "that" email). Like I said, that was only my experiences in the SE carpark. I'm unaware of the other permit zones. Pretty sure there's spaces in the off-campus permit zones but who wants to pay for a permit only to park off-campus and walk/catch the free bus in..........

I wasn't being sarcastic. I didn't really read into the permit stuff this year because I'm still on my Ls, but my plan is to drive to uni next year. What I understood was that there were a limited number of $400 blue parking permits, and once they ran out, you were put on a waiting list. I didn't think that they would oversell them, because that would defeat the purpose of having permit parking.

I totally agree. I was referring to the blue permits! There was initially a massive queue for blue permits during week 1 and before the semester began - and then that email came about the extra allocation. Seems to me like it's just an excuse to get some extra $$.

I buy permits for pure convenience (did so at La Trobe last year too), however I find that this permit is quite the opposite (especially if you come from say 10am onwards). I hate driving around trying to find a spot - just imagine that during exam time.

So it takes me 45-50 mins by car to get to uni, but around 90 mins by train(s) (during peak hour services, since all my classes start mainly at 9am so i've learnt to become an early riser on a consistent basis now) and I honestly prefer the train over driving (after having trialed both). Again, this is only for SE car park which fills up the quickest. Dunno about the one in the north.

Unless public transport is really inaccessible in your area and takes you forever, my recommendation is don't bother. A permit would be REALLY ideal for someone who has heaps of contact hours and starts relatively early (8am-10am) for 3+ days (in my opinion, anyway).

A permit is not a guaranteed, reserved spot. They are oversold because not every student is on campus at the same time so they can oversell comfortably, except one of the big blue-spot car parks closed this year for construction so now all the on-campus permit parking is filled mostly during the day so you need to park off-campus with a permit generally, unless you get lucky.

Sometime in 2018-19 the construction will finish and there will be an underground carpark which should resolve the issue.

My commute is actually really good compared to most people. I'm just thinking more for when I have to go between uni and work or uni and off campus labs and things. Just not sure if it's worth 400 bucks.

Sometime in 2018-19

How helpful -.-

I always get a park, don't know what you guys are complaining about. :P

In all seriousness, though, in my experience, there's usually a park or two available at the eng multilevel, and everytime I hear someone complaining, they're parking in SE4 or gravel (which is right next door). So, it might be worth if around there?

Also, permit is good if you stay late at night like me, so you don't have to worry about weird people on PT/bad PT line-ups.

What's it like? Of course, if you don't live that far away and need to get to places quickly, driving would be the way to go. I don't really see my permit as useful because I only use it for basically 1 day a week and catch PT every other day. Realistically I could pay for a daily ticket since that area is basically empty at 8am but since i've got the permit I may as well use it.

Since I don't have any commitments anymore (I dropped my casual job as a uni tutor to pursue masters), I can understand your need to get around quickly or go places at a moments notice.

I don't really mind train travel to be honest, even though it takes forever. Gives me some alone time to listen to music, relax and observe.

Either you're really lucky or you must come in ridiculously early if you're always getting a park..

~15 minutes on the bus. Maybe 25ish in bad traffic. I come in every day and I'm there basically 9-5 and it would be so convenient but yeah. Still not really sure.

I like train travel too. Especially in off peak times when it's empty.

If that's the case, I would get it. When I was at La Trobe doing 20-25 hours a week (includes my casual tutoring), I bought a reserved parking permit purely for the convenience because I used to watch everyone drive round and round the carparks stressing out, and I didn't want that. I know it's a different uni but the same thing happens everywhere. It was so nice not having to worry, especially during exam time.

This isn't reserved. Just parking on campus which would be convenient.

In other news, I quit my job today. I'm so happy about it :)
