Eeeeee you have no idea how excited this makes me! Who took your first class? Do you like your tutors? Is your tute room tucked away in some ridiculous corner of campus? Linguistics at Monash is the best thing ever, and everybody in the entire department is so lovely.

Please please please update me through the semester how you're finding it, and also feel free to ask any questions at all. ;D

I had Louisa Willoughby for my first lecture and I have Catherine Cook for tutorials who seems nice enough. SO thankful she didn't make us go through the dreaded icebreakers. :P

Thankfully I'm not too tucked away! I'm in Menzies on the third floor but it was relatively easy to find (Philosophy is a different story what with it being on the other side of campus ::)) I've been wanting to try linguistics since year 10 but I've always been a little weary since it's obviously much more scientific than literature (which I love) but I'm actually really, really enjoying it. ;D

Ooh, I didn't know Louisa took first-year classes! She's great - I hope you love it! ;D And I also had Cat as my first-year tutor, so that's sort of cute haha. She's fantastic, and really funny. :)

Eeeeee Linguistics!

Yeah! Louisa is brilliant! We don't have her all the time though, I think it's on rotation. Did you by any chance have Catherine at 8AM as well? Haha Waking up at 5:45 RIP me

Do you have Kate Burridge at all? ;D

I actually can't recall when my tute was, but yeah, that's a pretty savage time haha.

Hi everyone hope your first week was great !!  :)

just a quick question. DO tutorials/ support classes cover material from the week before?

As in would a tute in week 2 discuss questions relating to week 1's material ?

Generally, yes. :) I mean, I can't say with 100% certainty that that will be the case for any particular unit, but put it this way: it was the case for 100% of my units haha.

Ahhhh! I have Cat too! Not the 8AM one though which I think you have. Found it very funny how she just skipped over the ice breaker and spent the entire first tutorial geeking out to any linguistics related questions we had.

I hope we do at some point. Need to know what the hype around her is all about! The timetables do list the lecturers and their dates, but I think they're all outdated because a lot of my other lectures/tutes have incorrect names on them.

Like Joseph said, generally. There are cases where this isn't necessarily true though - for e.g. the education faculty (majority of units).

Point of the message: It really depends on the specific unit + faculty it's in. In most cases, tutes will cover lecture material from previous week.

Hahaha I love everything about this post.

What was the first lecture on? I think in 2013 we looked at the differences between human and animal interaction or something along those lines. It was taken by Kate, and that's the moment I knew I was majoring in Linguistics. ;)

Yep, same. The differences between animal and communication, haha.

Woo, week 1 over. Congratulations, guys!

How was everyone's week? :)

Pretty overwhelming... Two days in and I realise how much I miss working and how lazy a lack of work is making me. Pretty sure I saw Sine around in a lecture but that could have been my eyes playing tricks on me  ::). I'm talking to people(I think) but I can never find them after lectures  ???. Oh well, guess I'll just wait for tutes and pracs to start to make friends If I can muster up the courage and social skills to do so...

I feel this. Being around new people in a new environment is very overwhelming. I'm exhausted.

Don't worry, I'm socially awkward too. :P

Is anyone heading down to Gravity tomorrow?

Here's a little snippet from their Facebook page:
Quote
Gravity is a not-for-profit organisation that is run by students, for students. Our aim is to improve student wellbeing at the University of Melbourne. We are building an energetic, dynamic community that promotes mindful living through practices such as yoga, meditation and social activities - with a creative edge. We passionately believe that you can hugely improve your university experience by developing strategies to help tackle the stress of day-to-day life. We hope for you to experience positive change by joining our journey with Gravity today.

They will be holding a one hour yoga session from 1-2. You can also get a free cold-pressed juice afterwards too.

I've been practicing yoga since November last year, and it's a really really great way to unwind and relax- something we all might need at the moment. This is so great and I'm pretty excited, I can't endorse it enough. If anyone is interested you can book your tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/gravity-x-monash-2-tickets-32559468246 (It's free).
