What is it about medicine that makes it so popular? Does it pay well, or do you all find surgery a very interesting and exciting profession?

In the subcontinent especially doctors are very very highly respected because Med is impossible to get into in Lanka - imagine...you need to get a z-score of about 2.1 OUT OF THE PEOPLE WHO PASS A-LEVELS...but only <10% of the country pass A-levels. So imagine something like...99.90-99.95 being the med cutoff.

Curry elders tend to be judgemental and live off their kids' achievements, so like a parent would gain enormous respect (almost reverence) if he/she can say "my son is doing medicine" (for entertainment, imagine that said in a curry accent *cringes*). Also in Sri Lanka in particular, doctors' salaries are quite high in a country where poverty is rife, and doctors are enormously well respected in the SL community.

My life is curry tooooo... but not to that extent kiddies. My parents expect a 99+ from be (but that's because they know I can do it). They also really want me to get into mbbs, but if I decide not to do it then no biggie. They only think I should do it because they think I'd be good at it and enjoy it, they never pushed my brother to do med because he wanted to do engineering/IT and that was ok. On the other hand, I see my aunt who invested sooo much time and money into trying to get my cousin into med, he had ~50th percentile UMAT but nevermind that, he ended up doing biomed/commerce then dropping the biomed side of it. IMHO he should be doing arts because that's what he's good at and enjoys, but his parents were too shortsighted to let go of the "you should do med/law/etc." pushiness. At least my parents could see that it was wrong for his parents to push him to do Med, they're relatively open-minded about education. The main reason my Mum doesn't want me to do a science degree is because she doesn't want me to end up working for other people like herself/depending on government grants - she wants me to do a job that lets me be my own boss.

Anyway, this time next week I'll be poppin' champagne :D

@thushan Law's not that big there though, it's more Med, then Engineering, then good government/public sector jobs then law.

Well I want to become a doctor because I like their kind of work, working with people, working with sciences as well as the multiple career choices I can have, specialising in different things

I also find the human body interesting. I prefer medicine over something else say biomedical sciences (such as pharmacology) because of the patient interactions, I'm not the type of person who can work in a lab all day!!! But I agree, doctors generally get a lot of respect in society, it's probably a cumulating of multiple facets including, but not limited to, the fact that doctors do altruistic work, are intelligent, are helpful and are in one of the few professions that value people and health over profits.

But I also agree with what Thushan is saying, even though my parents wouldn't take pride in saying "my son is doing medicine", they do have pride in me being able to achieve that. On top of that, yes, doctors do get a high salary, but in Australia, it's not extravagantly high and the work is tough and there's often long hours, there's much more money in other areas

In a lot of asian countries, being a doctor = money, prestige, respect.
Over here, there's still a lot of respect and prestige, but money? I'd drop out of school and start my own business if my life goal was to be a millionaire.

@paul: also in Asian countries, which are mostly developing countries, engineers build the country and help it become more modern and developed. Hence, engineers are really important and respected there. Here, there's not many jobs available in engineering. Personally, I find engineering pretty interesting, all that problem solving and design (and depending on what field, the opportunity to be really creative) and cutting edge technology <3 + it's reallly mathematical and I love my maths. A lot of my relatives are engineers.

@Spesh - Disagree

Politician - they're one of the most hated people in society
Soldier - that's promoting war, you're killing
Lawyer - there's a reason why lawyers have one of the lowest levels of trust in society
Fireman - that's not a profession, that's a job you do over summer
Business - So you're saying prestige = money?

@Ducky - Yeah that's what my dad was saying, the thing about engineering here is that it's not so much the innovation side anymore but it's the really boring testing, supervising...etc kind of work
But hmm, I agree with you, doctor = prestige and respect
AND LOL! of course you love maths, you did the NMSS!! :( hmphh *glare*

Oh and according to my dad, "if you do medicine, all the old guys will come and offer their daughters to you".....LOOOLL!! i don't know if he was joking or not!

Challenge accepted:
Politician - working for themselves and changing the country through bullshit.
Joining the army - being a heroic and honourable soldier, a somewhat contentious position
Lawyer - Making the world a fair and justified place. Being the voice of the minorities. This is what a lawyer should do. Not sure whether they do that in real life though...getting the bigwigs off...
Fireman - Fighting blazing bushfires and saving the innocent from natural disasters :D
Businessman/woman - Successful business people make millions whilst screwing others over.

I've never found a more noble career than teaching, did I ever tell you guys that I've always wanted to be a teacher, except my parents think I won't get paid enough, but I talked them through it and if I don't get into MBBS then I'm thinking of doing a Bachelor of Science and then applying for post-graduate medicine, if I don't get that, then I'll do a Diploma in Education and become a teacher :)

no no no! i have plenty of respect for them, but it's not something you do day-in-day-out, and plus CFA firefighters are volunteers!
