Nah mate, leave it - it's a build-up thread, you can talk about anything you want here, just so long as it is generally appropriate and not troll-y.

I can see what you're saying... medicine does sound very prestigious. Saving innocent lives, helping victims of cancer, making lots of money etc.
But I mean there are heaps of other equally prestigious jobs out there. I'm just curious why everyone clings onto one of them.
If it's a traditional thing, then I understand. I know a lot of people who joined the police force because so many of their parents, grandparents, great-grandparents etc. joined the police and they wanted to continue on with the tradition.

Well, what do you want to be Spesh@Spesh, if you thought about it deeply you'd have reasons for that, similarly, those who want to go into medicine will have their own desires, tradition may or may not be one of them (it's not for me -  no one in my extended family are anything medically related)

It's called biomedical engineering and it already exists :P

Also @paul:
I agree with teaching, teachers are so undervalued in Australian society. I owe a lot to having some really awesome teachers, and having incompetent/disengaged teachers is horrible. My Uni Maths teacher, however, is a really smart guy and really loves maths and gets all excited when he teaches us new things. Once, he told us he got an ENTER of 99.35 for VCE. Someone in my class asked him "then why are you a teacher?". That's the kind of mentality that keeps our education system down :(
I won the GAT: 49/50/50.

Amen. My head of house at school was amazingly smart, did really well at school (he went to scotch as a boy!), school captain, music captain. people at my school keep saying that he "wasted" his life becoming "only" a high school teacher :S

I know, my physics teacher got three 50's LOL! :D he's a gun, he took on a scholarship to do a Bachelor of Science (Honours) at Monash, the awesome one where you can do it all in 3 years with individual guidance, and then he became a teacher
But yeah, I hate the negative mentality towards teachers, I think it's the stigma, like I actually honestly do want to become a teacher, I enjoy teaching others! But yeah, who knows, I might become one some day :D
I remember my physics teacher saying that some of the guys in his DipEd cohort couldn't even get 60% on the methods exam and they wanted to teach methods, I think that's kind of stupid don't you think :S

It's called biomedical engineering and it already exists :P
I thought I was a genius for a second there :( - let me have my funnnnnnn!!!!!
