My school used Heinnemann too but I also self-studied using the Essentials textbook. In my humble opinion Heinemann goes over the most BASIC of BASIC concepts. It doesn't really challenge your understanding of the concepts and it can be really repetitive at times. Personally, I'd only recommend using Heinemann if you're struggling with something and need to go back to basics to get some sort of foundation on it.

How did you specifically "self study". I assume the class work is a work requirement, so you did that, then went home and did it again in essentials?

I have essentials and also math quest so which one should i do?

Yeah, basically I did the assigned Heinemann work in class and then at home I tried to do as much Essentials work as I could. Sometimes it wasn't possible, but during SAC revision I always did Chapter Reviews etc from Essentials rather than Heinemann.

I never used Maths Quest but I heard from friends it's a tiny bit harder than Heinemann and generally okay. I personally found some Essentials questions (especially the ER. questions in Chapter Reviews) to be ridiculously hard, but it does challenge your understanding and problem-solving skills which is good practice for the exams. I think you could start with Maths Quest/ HNM first and if it gets too easy/repetitive then move on to Essentials/VCAA questions.

If ε = {two digit numbers between 10 and 20}, A = {numbers whose digits add up to 5} and B = {even numbers}

find  (A ∩ B)′?
so far i have found that.
A = {14}
A′ = {11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19}
B = {12, 14, 16, 18}
 B′ = {11, 13, 15, 17, 19}
 A ∪ B = {12, 14, 16, 18}
A ∩ B = {14}

why cant we just go

sin(theta) = 0.69   (cause sin(180-theta) is positive)

ive seen this work everywhere else, however this question wants to use trig identities

That only works if you're given sin(180-theta) = 0.69
But you're given a cosine.

How would you do this question using tree diagram?

Well...for it to be red AND green, you need it to be red on the first spin. so 1/2 chance there. Then, you need it to be green on the second spin, so 1/2 there. If you draw a tree diagram, you'll find the probability of getting red then green is 1/2 * 1/2 = 1/4

a questions asks what is the rate of change. the answer is -2litres/hour however answer just has 2 litres/hour, when a such question is asked do we forget the negative because it is changing at 2" litres an hour. When would we write the negative part aswell?

It really depends on how you word your final answer. The rate of decrease of volume is 2 L/hr whereas the rate of change of volume is -2 L/hr.

Here's something cool that can help - these are called De Morgan's Laws:

They're not covered in methods, but they can help you out in some probability stuff (I've had students use this to very easily do MC questions on practice exams).
