Good eReader

Hello,

Hopefully this relates to the technology section.

I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good eReader?

This is so I don't need to purchase a whole heap of text books (Some I don't want.... Jacaranda Physics....Heinemann Methods....) but to use the pdf's from friends.

ipad perhaps? not only that, you can take notes...and play games when your bored..heheh

Kindle, sony tablet, transformer.
If you get ipad, youll find that all other brands are releasing way better tablets .. so no point in one.

Get a proper e-reader rather than something like a tablet with Kindle apps. Real e-readers use eInk technology which 1) does not hurt your eyes because it's not backlit, and 2) uses NO battery to keep the eInk on the page (it only uses power when changing pages). My Kindle lasts me something like a month on one charge, and I use it every day.

I recommend the Kindle because I have it and I love it but I hear the Nook is quite good too. The keyboard Kindle (Kindle 3) is good if you plan on making notes in your ebooks, otherwise get the latest one that's out - it's smaller and doesn't have a keyboard and is slightly cheaper than the Kindle 3.

Second on the Kindle. For their price now you simply can't go wrong.

I use mine everyday too. It's quite amazing how much easier reading is now.

We bought our english teacher a Kindle for a thank-you pressie, she loved it!

My mum has an iPad, which is also a great ebook reader :_

The kindle is amazing for reading, but I wouldn't want to use my textbooks on one. The way I use textbooks is quickly flipping through them etc. and examining their diagrams - those are the two weaknesses of the Kindle.

Yeah unfortunately the kindle 3 isn't the best for reading PDFs although I hear the new one is a bit better

Is the kindle still tied down to the Amazon store or can I load it with my own PDF's?

you can load it with whatever you want

download Calibre, it'll convert most e-book formats into the Kindle format

To clarify that, you cannot put pdfs on a Kindle but Calibre can convert them to .mobi format. It does it via OCR I'm pretty sure, so you can sometimes get some weird typos (like cl instead of d)

yes you can!

it's just really hard to read because you have to zoom in and out and scroll around all the time

WHAT HOW TELL ME MINE NEVER SHOW UP!!!

1) put it in your calibre library without converting and then just send to library as you would normally do
or
2) plug in kindle, go to the "documents" folder and just copy/paste it straight there

I loaded the Maus 1 + 2 PDFs this way and I can read it (...just. Tiny text T_T)

I just tried the Kindle at Dicksmith, very good but it is hard to go from page 1 to, say, page 50.

My question is: How do I change to a specific page and then back to the page I was on? (Without constantly clicking the -> key and <- key).
