Short or long division of polynomials

Hi everybody! I'm interested in knowing whether it is essential to learn how to factorise cubic polynomials by both long and short division? Are both essential in year 12? Or can we pick the method we like best?

You should know both, and you can choose any method you want. Sometimes the question might say, using long division etc, then you would obviously just use long division.

Yeah, short division is not as popular as long division.

I only know one kind (long division) and so far it's been okay.

I know both but like to use long division more. But it depends on how long the question would be as to which one I would use on a case by case basis.

Has anyone heard of synthetic division? Do we learn that in methods?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think synthetic division is just another name for short division of polynomials. And no, you don't learn it in methods and it isn't necessary to know.

Hmmm...that's quite interesting. Thanks for that.
