I guess the title says it all: Should i get a tutor for chem? As I've alluded in the Lit forum, please don't say everyone is different! Be as blunt as you'd like! And for any language students here, is a language tutor helpful?

If you don't understand theories/calculations etc. for chem, then get a chem tutor.

Well the point is, everyone IS different. If there was a simple yes or no answer, a guide or FAQ would've already covered it. So yeh, if you want your question answered, provide some background information such as your aims, your current grades, your learning style and such.

Tutors are good for getting ahead of the class. They are a great resource to help you out with perplexing concepts, and save you hours of study time. The downside is that you have to travel quite a bit and can be quite expensive.
If you can get ahead of the class by yourself and you are quite organised in the way you learn, then you don't need one :)

Personal Answer: I've never needed a tutor for Chem, I just made sure I explained the concepts to myself and asked friends for help when needed, I've never came to like the excessive costs of tutors

But like others have said, it's up to you, everyone's different

This should apply for my lit post as well:

I'm not the student that needs a tutor because I get low grades; I want a tutor because I am paranoid that other students with tutors might beat me. I guess what my question should be: is it possible to get above a 45 in my subjects without a tutor? I was thinking going to tsfx for summer schools and their revision lectures. But then I saw in the assesors comments for chem that the hgh-scoring resposnes were of first-year tertiary level and it got me thinking that I might need a private tutor for chem.

All my friends brag about their tutors. Personally, I don't really want a tutor but I am really scared of being at a disadvantage with other top students if I don't get one.

All the 48+ students (for any subjects- esp. lit and chem): did you guys have a tutor?

fair enough - in that case you won't need a tutor. You can beat the guys who do have tutors even if you don't have one. Oh, and just because some high scoring responses are at tertiary level, that does not mean a solid year 12 answer will not get full marks. if you provide a correct, solid, well explained answer at year 12 level you will get full marks for the question.

Definitely possible to score 45+ in a subject like Chemistry where the majority of things are fairly objective, the study design itself included. I personally never had one and don't think I would have done any better even if I did.

slight tangential, but I will, for the rest of my life, wonder whether having a tutor could have saved me those few precious marks on methods/spesh, probably not though :(

If you have a good chem teacher at school, don't think you do.
If you can motivate yourself to do extra studying, don't think you do.
If none of the above, why not get one? :D but i would personally not pay > $50 for one, id rather buy more books/resources with that money

If you find the big concepts hard to learn, then I would recommend getting one,

In saying that, I believe you can study and learn chemistry just by reading the textbook,
the two textbooks, in particular the Heinemann have great explanations, and include all you need to know for the exam
while you may occassionally be unsure of a few minor details, you can ask your teacher
but I don't believe that a regular weekly tutor lesson for Chemistry is essentially

If you do get a tutor, totaled is an absolute beast. Definitely give him a shot

One of the top students at MHS this year a 50 in year 11 (in psych). Knows his stuff back to front for all his subjects, but perhaps more importantly is a great and efficient communicator and a great guy.

All my friends brag about their tutors.

Get new friends.

Anyway, it's definitely possible to get a 45+ score in any subject without a tutor, but I recommend you wait until you know who your school chem teacher will be for next year, and how good they are. If you have a good teacher who covers everything necessary, and who you can follow and understand, then you're set. If, however, you feel that your teacher isn't giving you everything you need to do your best, then invest in a tutor.

EDIT: Also, for languages, a native-speaker tutor can definitely come in handy, especially if you want to perfect your speaking skills in preparation for orals/the oral exam, and it is so helpful to have someone to check over your essays/work who can identify your areas of weakness and address them.
