Jobs? No experience.

Well, aside from the 2 weeks work experience almost everyone gets in year 10, thats it. I've never really worked before and at this time I understand its quite hard to get a job... Any ideas other than McDonalds, Coles, Safeway? Or are they the only places that will accept people with no experience? :\

What sort of strengths do you reckon you have?

edit: whilst it is a shameless plug, click that ad above my post and that is something to do in the mean time, and can actually help you get a job.

What ad? -cannot see anything other than my post above your post-

Well.. I'm pretty good with computers, wouldn't mind something to do with them.. do you know of any place I could get an IT kind of job? The pay doesn't really bother me I just want something to do and grab some experience.

Increase your employability with Upskill while helping ATAR Notes!

Well yeah, I tried doing something with computers after year 12 and no one would take me. I have learn't nothing new or relevant about computers since then. Now that I've done first year uni suddenly I've got a job in computers (sorta) based on marks, age, etc. which I personally think is ridiculous.

Your best way to go is apply for jobs at stores like Harvey Norman, JB HI-Fi, Dick Smith, and if they fail, try and find some small boutique firms and try for an administration job. I find that whilst they're very boring, they're quite good for progressing into better positions over time.

I am in a similar situation but I have non-official experience helping out at my parents' business in a sales assistant sort of position... Do people like me normally add that to a resume? More importantly, will employers look at it as legit experience? :S

Haha, I did that too! I 'worked' at my parents business for a year or so, but thankfully you couldnt tell that the business was my parents from its title. (; I wrote it in my resume applying at Coles, and the interviewer was really confused as to why I would apply for an entry-level job when I was doing a secratarial job for so long.. (A)

You could try applying for a telemarketing position. I remember a few years ago quite a number of kids applied and were accepted at a young age (16?) with minimal experience. The pay is really good for a part-time job too, but from what I can remember working conditions may be below-par and not as flexible as most part-time jobs.

You would also have to keep in mind that you are the scum of the earth on a daily basis. I joke I joke :p

^ yeah that's a good one

You will hate it, get sworn at, have poor working conditions, and in general hate your miserable life, but it's a great intro into better sales roles in the future. It also pays alright, just make sure you watch your contract. An idiot mate of mine worked full time for a month for 400 bucks because he was on commission.

telecommunications is good. My brother started off volunteering to for make a wish foundation, a great way to ease into telemarketing because a) it's for a good cause and b) people usually listen to calls asking for donations to charity and don't get all rude and hang up. If you're good at it, you can get into better jobs, and even get a foot in in the IT industry (I take it that's what you're interested in), potentially.

If you play a sport you could apply for a position as an umpire (i.e. for netball, hockey etc..) I'm pretty sure that even if you don't play hockey you can take a two month course and become an umpire.
Or if you can swim you could apply for a pool lifeguard position ( my friend has being doing this since she was 15)
Alternatively you could look into the Army reserves, I think they only require one day a week minimum of work and they have a variety of positions - you'd probs have to look into that though..

I'M not sure about I.T jobs, I do have a friend whose brother was into I.T and he managed to get a part time job at his uni's I.T department. If you're not too bothered about what you want to do you could check out  http://melbourne.gumtree.com.au/ for cleaning, waitressing and lots of other opportunities.
Don't worry about experience, even if they say 'experience preferred' you can still ring up and give it a go. In fact my sister has no experience in massage therapy at all and she got two massage jobs on gumtree. Gumtree has been a gold mine for us, so check it regularly and you'll find something for sure!
