Overloading in First Year
« on: December 11, 2011, 03:59:11 pm »

I'm intending to do a degree which already has 48 points of study in first year, I'm wanting to do a Diploma in Arts alongside it, which adds an extra 12 points per year

Will I be allowed to overload in first year (I kinda have to I guess) - also, is overloading that bad, in terms of the workload?

you can overload in the second semester if you have a D average or such. if your ATAR is something sick like 99+ you might be able to, just bug the enrolments people in charge of your faculty - i have nothing to back this up though. its pretty easy, just might get annoying during exam times with close/clashing dates

Which degree are you studying, to begin with?  That changes things.

Overloading isn't too bad though, you just have to be organised.  Really though, it's definitely manageable if you're smart about it.

I'm wanting to do Medicine, which is 48 points core across all 5 years, considering there are people who do DipArts or DipLang with it, they have to overload somewhere

And with anyone who knows, if I overload do I have to tell the faculty first or do I just put them all into the WES?

Dunno how it works with Monash, but they're kinda sneaky in melbourne, because you can add in extra subjects by yourself, but afterwards if you never got permission then they consider it your own fault for being ignorant. So best to ask them first. Also, I'm pretty sure you can't overload in first semester.

Alright, I'll contact Monash on Enrolment day and see what they say about it

And LOL! what actually happens when you add more subjects in yourself at Melbourne without asking for permission?

I don't think they let you overload in Med in first year first semester at Monash - that's a different story.  The timetable is pretty hectic, and it's a much stricter timetable as well.  I'd wait for someone like Shinny to come in and comment.

Not sure...I did it once and halfway through the semester, I needed them to fix something on my study plan, which involved me telling them I was overloading. I had applied like twice before, and it was only that semester that I realised I could just add more subjects in myself, so I assumed they had let me do it cause I applied twice already. But turns out I was wrong, hah. They just told me to submit the appropriate forms. I doubt anything TOO bad can happen... such as not being allowed to graduate or something.

It's not really possible to overload with Monash Medicine. We don't have actual subjects. It just has semester codes such as MED1011, MED1022, MED2031, MED2042 etc, which are our units with all our subjects within them I guess. For those who do a DipArts or Law and so on, they essentially skip a hell of a lot of lectures for their other degree since the Med faculty clearly states Med commitments take priority over everything.

So do Med students share any lectures with Non-Med students?

And alright, I get what you mean, so it's kind of like overloading but you're just skipping lectures from the DipArts degree, that's not too bad! :D

Yeh, everything we do is by ourselves. Lectures and tutorials included. Not too sure of the structure of DipArts, but I imagine you just skip a lot. For Law, for first and second year, you skip quite a bit but eventually you're meant to take one year off purely to do Law. Not completely sure of the structure but I've got friends next year who are taking the entire year off Med to do their Law year.

Yeah, one of my friends who's doing Med right now says that the DipArts is concurrent though, so like you still finish the MBBS and DipArts in 5 years, I guess I can do the Arts subjects sooner or later, but I much prefer to do it in 1st/2nd year cause I'll actually be on campus a lot. Apparently in years 3-5 basically the whole course is at a hospital and you rarely even come to Clayton, right?

I went to Clayton once this year, and that was on the first day of orientation. You'll never go there unless you're at Monash Medical Centre or Dandenong Hospital. That being said, if you are doing law or something else that requires you to be on campus, the faculty will place you at Monash Medical Centre for obvious reasons. But yes, you'll definitely want to knock it out of the way by 2nd year regardless.
