Ok, well as some of you may or may not know, I have two preferences listed on VTAC

1. MBBS - Monash
2. BSc/BEd - Monash

Now, if I end up doing the Science/Education course and finish, does anyone know what the process is to apply for a teaching job? Do we get to choose the school where we teach or does the Department of Education do that? I just really don't want to end up at a school where all the kids are rebels and won't listen to me, I actually want to teach at my old school (Glen Waverley Secondary College), I really like the educational environment there, the staff are great as well as the students being excellent compared to some other public schools out there. I actually want to teach in a reputable school

Can anyone actually point me in the right direction regarding this (i.e. how teachers choose where to teach) or do teachers apply to the school itself?

This may be twisted a bit since it is what I've seen with my sister. Nearing the end of the year (or sometime midyear) schools advertise positions avaliable. A number of teacher apply, the school picks which ones they like for an interview. They have the interview and pick the one they all agree on best. They can then offer the teacher a contract for say 6 months or 12 months (e.t.c) and then see what they want to do after that time period, or they can offer the teacher an "ongoing" position (this is what you want to get). This means that you are basically at the school as long as you want to be unless you do something wrong, then they can get rid of you.

Really it comes down to luck, wether the school you want has postions in the area that you are qualified in at the right time you are looking. You can always continue looking around too. And keep in mind in your first year you are unlikely to get a yr 11 or yr 12 class (although it does happen sometimes), and you may not start off with the exact subs you want e.t.c. You work you're way up.

Keep in mind that it may not be entirerly correct, but its close enough.

Alright, thanks b^3, so my understanding of it is that

(Graduate) -> (Look for ads) -> (Apply to the school) -> (Interview) -> (School accepts/rejects)

That's not too bad then, so it's pretty similar to any other job I guess :)

Well I guess I'll be hoping to become a maths teacher and there's heaps of maths classes anywhere, so I guess there's a demand to a certain extent, but yeah, I know, usually at my school they give new teachers Year 11 classes if they're good but rarely Year 12 classes, the Year 12 teachers are pretty set

But aite, thanks for that, cleared it up a lot b^3 :)

There is some system for the ads bit, I'm not too sure of it though. And note my sister did Bsc/Bed @ Monash and education is boring as hell. And the last year of the degree (fourth year) was education only, and it nearly drove her insane. But anyway good luck with whatever you decide.

Just note this is AFAIK, maybe go and talk to your teachers at your school, particularly the new ones just to check, they'll know more.

I've always loved to teach and I can manage a year, it shouldn't be too bad! Plus, I'll enjoy the BSc component of it, so should be aite :)

Yeah, I had a chat to one of my teachers, but he's older and he was just saying that he doesn't remember how they did it for uni graduates, he just remembers applying to our school because we needed an experienced year 12 physics teacher and he got accepted, he wanted to leave his old school (private) to move into the public system (apparently you get massive superannuation if you work in public) and apparently it's a little different for private schools too

Hmm.. are you sure you really want to enter teaching? It sounds to me like you're getting a bit hyped up with finishing year 12 and missing the place and not knowing any better (if that makes sense) and so on... remember, the only learning environment we've been exposed to in our lives is a school. University will be heaps different and will open new doors.. for some reason I feel you want to do teaching because we've been in the schooling system for so long and you feel you 'know' it well.. BUT I'd say don't close yourself off and restrict yourself to a teaching degree just yet. You could do a teaching degree afterwards, no problems. :) And btw, you definitely seem a lot more keen for Medicine.. hope you get it!

Yeh there is always the option of doing the degree you want and then doing a year of education at the end. But if you go into teaching, you have to really enjoy it, and be able to put up with a lot of things.

Teaching is good, but don't lose hope! You can STILL get into MBBS at Monash.

I know, but I honestly do love teaching, I know that it's not a field which a lot of students would go into, but I have taught in the past, tutoring, teaching others, taken a software development class once, and I honestly do love it :)

But yep, I'm thinking of changing my second preference to BSc at Melbourne and then deciding if I want to become a teacher in 3 years time, I think that leaves more options open for me :)

Thanks guys!

Teaching is a career that is very easy to "love" until you actually need to do it full time, at which point it becomes a hell of a lot harder to love.

Also, get a PhD and work as an academic, way better lifestyle than high school teaching

Thanks for the advice Russ, I've changed my second preference (well it's my 3rd cause I have bonded med as well) to Science at Melbourne.

I'll try for graduate entry Med again in 3 years (if I don't get in now) and if I still don't get in, I'll toss up between academic and teaching - academics seems so nerdy though, not enough working with people :(
