Confusion with the GAMSAT
« on: December 18, 2011, 05:46:24 pm »

When exactly are students allowed to take the GAMSAT?

On the site, it says during the penultimate and final year of their bachelor degree, but does that mean you may ONLY sit the GAMSAT during those years? I had heard from a med student that you may sit the GAMSAT as many times as you want, so I'm a bit confused now.

I also intend on taking a two-year Master of Engineering after my Science degree, so that's another question, is it possible for me to sit the GAMSAT four times (penultimate Bachelor year, final Bachelor year and both years in the post-grad Engineering course) OR do I sit the GAMSAT in those two years of post-grad Engineering?

Cheers.

** Posted this in the Melb Uni forums cos it's where I intend to study next year :)

You can sit the GAMSAT 4 times, but if you're applying for medicine after your masters, then only the final 2 times will count.

You can take the GAMSAT as many as you like. There are two GAMSATs you can take in a year GAMSAT UK (which is held in Melbourne during September) and GAMSAT Aus (held in March usually). The GAMSAT results are valid for two years. You are allowed to take the GAMSAT during your final or second last year of an undergraduate degree. You are completely free to sit the GAMSAT during you Master of Engineering. Hope that helps

It's important to remember that if you sit the GAMSAT UK the year before you plan to start med, that score can't be used for applying. i.e. a 2011 GAMSAT UK score can't be used for 2012 admission, but instead can be used for 2013/14 entry (as the GAMSAT results are considered valid for two admission cycles, as opposed to years)

Can someone confirm this:
If go do a BSc @ UoM,
I take GAMSAT at the start of 2nd year, GAMSAT UK near end of 2nd year, GAMSAT (AUS) at start of 3rd year.
And that will all be legit to use after my undergrad degree to apply for Postgrad Med/Dent?

I think that works out! and you get to do gamsat 3 times!

Yup, I'm doing the exact same (I've already sat it twice this year, and will sit it again in March in my third year).

Sorry, just what exactly is the GAMSAT UK for? Is that only used for when applying to schools in the United Kingdom? If not, which schools in Aus take into account the GAMSAT UK?

GAMSAT and GAMSATUK are identical.  You can use GAMSATUK marks to apply to any uni in Australia.  It is what I will probably be doing. :)

Are ya sure about being able to use GAMSAT UK marks to apply to Australian unis? I would've thought you could only use your GAMSAT UK marks for applying to UK universities?

It's absolutely right, the test is the same for Aus and UK and both are administered by ACER. The marks are interchangeable.

Positive champ. :)

I have sat the GAMSATUK.  Marks are eligible for 2 admission cycles from the date results are released.  So if you sit GAMSAT UK 2012, it is too late to use them to apply for 2013 entry, so you can use them for 2014 or 2015 entry.  I'm assuming you would be wanting 2015 entry, so the first GAMSAT you can sit is the 2012 UK one in September.

http://gamsat.acer.edu.au/results/validity-of-results/

If you look at the table, I sat GAMSAT UK 2011, so I can use my result to apply to unis in Aus for 2013 or 2014 entry.

There was also one saying it is fine on the ACER site, however since they upgraded all of their systems and website, I can't find it.  The table kind of implies it anyway...

So I can take GAMSAT UK during year 1? What is a good GAMSAT score btw? What are the rough cutoffs/good scores for UMelb, USyd and UQ of anyone knows? Thanks

^ I guess a 'good' GAMSAT score would be one that gets you into a medical school.

For melbourne uni, the lowest gamsat/gpa combo that got an interview seemed to be around 60-62 gamsat and 6.2+ GPA. I'm pretty vague on this but if I were you I would aim for a 65 in GAMSAT at least.
