If the GAT doesn't affect our ATAR, then what does it do? If there are large discrepancies between a Study Score, let's say English, and our GAT results for Written Communication, would VCAA investigate it to see whether the person cheated in English?

No.. The gat can only increase scores.. It cannot make them go down

So let's say I get a 45 in English, but only a 20/40 for Written Communication. My study score for English will not go down? Then what's the point of doing the GAT then?

Say if something happens on the day of the exam (Car crash, extremely sick) and you aren't in a position where you can sit it. The GAT as well as your SAC marks and maybe practice essays will be used to derive your exam score. Also I think if you don't do very well in say English however you get 40/40 for Written Comunication they may increase your study score by a few points, it's usually only by a small margin but I guess every little bit helps.

So if I do well in my VCE subjects and I sit all my exams, then the GAT is pointless?

Pretty much that was the feel from my school anyway. (Like half the kids walked out as soon as they could. But my school isn't very academically strong, so I couldn't tell you if this was the norm or not.) . Anyway it's just like a safety blanket if things fall through, I only tried because I would hate life if I hadn't and something had happened on exam day. Also what else would you be doing for those 2 hours that you didn't stay there for?

well yeah.. you never know if you break a leg on the way to an exam or you suddenly get sick so its like an insurance policy.
it also contributes a little if your study score doesnt match with what the GAT predicts but can only increase it

The GAT is also used to scale english when necessary. You'll just never be able to find out if it was.

What do you mean? So if I get a 45 English, and I got 20/40 for my Written Communication of the GAT, then my English study score would be scaled down????

^They wont get scaled down. Usually the GAT is considered
for a derived score should you, for any reason, UNABLE to finish
your english exam. Then they'd check your GAT scores at english.
