Hi totaled :)
i am aware that a GP's lifestyle is often more flexible than that of other specialists. this is because they deal with family medicine in the community setting, rather than hospitals. this means fewer emergencies and a more longstanding patient base that will trust you an continually revisit you. hence a GP can almost determine their own hours sometimes, leaving them time for their own family. the work is also lower intensity in terms of travel nature of tasks performed, so in some ways it has less stress attached to it.

as for the pay, it really depends on the amount that any doctor works. it is determined by the hours when it comes to public healthcare, and the nature of the care delivered in private (eg. an operation vs. a 15 min consultation). the differences in pay that arise between specialties due to the latter of these factors shouldn't really be the focus when you choose where you want to go.

what is the lifestyle, and pay of a gp like?

I think the pay is ~100k-120k(typically) from memory, not bad :)

edit: It can get up to 190k apparently!

so what do you think the pay is dependant upon? whether you work public or private?, or would it be say how experienced you are?
cos i hear stories of some gps who work 5 days say 9-5 for 120k, while my friends dad earns 250k~ for 4 days a week work 9-3pm

The pay can be up to 5 times this- it depends on the work. I know some GPs who work in aged care and do frequent nursing home/ retirment home visits, as well as aged care health plans and the like. The earnings for those activities are much greater than regular consultations. the hours are a result of the type of work. the higher paying work naturally has greater hours attached to it, and these doctors also work from home (manage patient notes).

Working for someone you're probably looking at $130-160k per year. If you own your own practice or co-own then you can earn a lot more (my gp drives a Bentley Continental GTC!). Rural practice can be extremely lucrative as well like $300k+. (read here: http://ochrerecruitment.force.com/careers/ts2__JobDetails?jobId=a0I90000003Q5bHEAS&tSource=)

There's a reason rural practice is like that

basically how many patients they have, moreso than the hours, if you're there 9-5 but you only have 10 patients per day, you're not gonna be very rich

Aspiring doctor. Why? For the same four reasons as everybody else. Chicks, money, power and chicks.

I don't think medicare will ever pay a GP 10k a week, unless your friends dad is charging a ridiculous gap fee. In that case, I don't think he would be booked out.

My parents are close friends with multiple doctors and many of my friends have parents that are doctors.

My dads friend who is a GP and opened a private practice lives in a huge mansion in Toorak, has a 12 car garage which is full and works Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. He takes a one hour break per day. I did work experience with him and he asked me to do some of his end of day paperwork each day. I won't go into specifics but he made over 10k in a week. That's AFTER everything was taken out... I wouldn't mind 10k a week in my pocket!

He's always fully booked though and he spends like 5-10 minutes with each patient. Very efficient but somehow you never feel as though he's trying to get rid of you. Great bloke,

My friends dad is also a GP and he owns a Bentley Continental GT.

This is a hilariously incorrect misrepresentation of GP earning potential. Income from owning a GP practice is completely different from income from working as a GP. Oh and if he spends 5 minutes with patients then he absolutely is trying to get rid of them.

Although please tell me if I'm wrong, since the highest goal in my life is definitely to own a Bentley Continental GT

Let me get this right. You resurrected a thread that was last posted in on 30 December 2011 to add ABSOLUTELY NOTHING of value to the conversation except to brag about how rich your family friends are?

People like you, who see nothing in medicine except how rich you can get and how many patients you can dispose of in as short an amount of time as possible, disgust me. Medicine is NOT about seeing how much money you can get. And life is not about how many cars you can afford to own. If you are not trolling, then you have a lot of growing up to do.

And also, don't fucking do this thread necromancy shit again
