Can alkenes have triple bonds? Or would they be alkynes?
Happy enough after one hell of a year.

When writing equations using structural formulas, i've noticed that the states are always omitted. Just wondering in the exam do we need to include the states when writing eqns using structural formulas?

It doesn't hurt, but afaik, it's not really needed.

Thanks guys.

In acetylsalicylic acid, there's a ester and carboxyl functional group. But would you say there's also an ether group as well as a methyl group?

Oh oh hmmm in esterification and hydrolosis reactions, are the states of the products and reactants always liquid?

A. 0.82
B. 1.12
C. 12.88
D. 13.18

i thought it was C but the answer is D...??

Just need some clarification on the states of reactions.
I know most of them are gas, and esterification is liquid, but how about the others? (eg. substitution chloroethane to ethanol etc.)

There's no ether group?
Ether is C-O-C , so the thing i circled in yellow is ether? cause i thought theres carbon on the corners of benzene ring. Unless there's no Carbon where my arrow is pointing at?

^That's not an ether link. An ether link only exists if the oxygen atom is between two alkyl groups. In this case it's between an aryl group and a carbonyl group.

With regards to hydrolysis, if water is one of the reactants, all other reactants and products will be aqueous (unless it involves heating and they turn to gas, or the product is insoluble in water).

Sorry but can you refresh my memory on what an alkyl group is? so are you saying the corner of the benzne ring is considered as an alkyl group?

I was actually mistaken there, the corner of the benzene ring is NOT an alkyl group :/ I don't know why I said that.

An alkyl group is essentially the carbon chain part of an alkane. It is made up purely of carbon and hydrogen atoms which are bonded purely through single bonds. They differ by a CH2 group, so methyl (CH3), ethyl (CH3CH2), propyl (CH3CH3CH2), butyl (CH3CH3CH3CH2), etc.
