JCU Interviews?
« on: December 28, 2011, 09:19:31 pm »

So I just received an email regarding a JCU interview (which surprised me tbh, as it is really late!), and am just wondering if there is any specific knowledge I should brush up on?

I've heard that they tend to ask some questions on current medical issues, tropical medicine issues and rural issues, all of which are topics I'm (unfortunately) not up-to-date on :(

Can anyone confirm this, and if so, suggest some links or starting points to read up on?

Thanks in advance AN :)

hey mate,

I just got the call that i got offered a seat for admission so pretty happy,

The set up is quite cosy: one table, with four chairs around it,

The three people will be comprised one person from James cook, a doctor and a community person.

There is basically two parts: One is the about JCU side and motivation for medicine side. The other is a personality analysis. , it is pretty straight forward. The first question will most liekley be "why james cook"
study up on what they offer and what exactly you like about the course. mention rural and research. Find out about some scholarships they offer, what they specailise in research terms.

they also ask you about current issues. they give you three issues for you to choose from and you have to speak about it for a while. Its a discussion so they will play devils advocate sometiems.

I got childhood obesity.

THey also give you situations and stuff. So mine was, you were lost in a place where you didn't know the language and couldn't communicate at all with people. What would you do.. Another was the classic teamwor one. as in you were stuck in a team where shit is fucked, i.e. one person doesn't want to work, one person has a different idea, one person is stubborn etc.. What would you do

IF you have any questions pm me.

Thanks for that :) Those scenarios look interesting, and don't seem to medical, so that's good news :)

Okay, so I'll go over the medical program and the rural focus, I honestly don't know much about it yet. That should be a good start.

Thanks again :) I'll post further queries here :)

Ah sorry just saw this! I had my interview on the 14th of December. The interview is pretty chilled, like Jdog said they'll ask some general questions like: why medicine? Why JCU? What are some of your weaknesses/strengths? JCU focuses on rural, remote and indigenous health so I'd do some research on healthcare delivery in these contexts and on issues affecting it. Talk about your major life experiences which have attracted you to medicine like sick family members, work experience, community service, etc. The interviewers won't let the discussion grind to a halt and they will spur it along if you run out of ideas. Wear a shirt and tie because I saw so many people underdressed. Medstudentsonline has a wealth of information about the JCU interview read a few threads on there. Good luck!

Cheers Hamdog17 :) Been procrastinating a bit since Jdog's post, but I think I'll need to get a move on then :)

Hm...I got a call from JCU last wednesday and they asked me if I was still interested, but I told them that I would most likely not go to their interview. They said they would send me an email anyways which I should respond to, however, I never got that email?

Anyone know what I should be doing?

The email you get gives you a form that has to be signed and faxed to jcu informing them of whether or not you're attending the interview. The form has a deadline I think, so if you've got no intention of going and presumably the deadline had passed seeing as interviews start on the 5th and the jcu office only opens tomorrow. I know of heaps of people with the beast atars declining their interviews and who are going to reject their real offers which is great for people like me!
