3/4 Question

Hello.

My question is if a car was travelling at 80 km/h and passes a police car, it takes 10 seconds for the police car to reach the speed of 80 km/h and another 5 seconds to reach the speed of 100 km/h. Find the time for the two cars to reach the same distance.

I didn't have the EXACT question with me but that is what the general idea was.

Could anyone give me a hint at what to do first?

you can graph it (speed vs time) and find the area(distance travelled) under the curve. Equate the distance travelled by the cop and the car and solve it to find t

I've written you a fairly detailed answer because many students seem to struggle with this question.

So once you've had a go, if you still can't work it out have a look at this.

Or beforehand if you wish, no one's stopping you...

Okay, this question is regarding the Nelson Physics Textbook.

I am thinking of getting this edition: https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2&ik=96ba751cc1&view=att&th=1346ef3b9e218126&attid=0.1&disp=inline&zw.

But since that's the older edition, I would like to know if anyone can comment on that edition and tell me if it is relevant still.

Firstly, the link doesn't work :(

If the textbook was released during the current study design then it would most likely be almost entirely relevant.

If not, It would still be relevant but would contain things that you don't need to learn and not contain things you do need to learn.

If you are going to use it as a secondary textbook to indulge yourself in as many questions as possible, then it may be worth the buy. Similarly, if you are going to use it as an extra source of notes, as for both of these you would know what applies and what doesn't after going through your "primary" textbook.

Ahh, Damn.

Its the Third Edition of Nelsons Physics, whereas they have released the Fourth Edition.

I'm not sure exactly how much the course syllabus has changed. It my be worthwhile having a read through the current study design and the previous one and sighting for differences while doing so.

It's always best to get the newer edition if possible (unless it says 'enhanced') :)

That edition was used for the VCE Physics Study Design Accredited 2005–2008
