I'M STILL STUCK! Althought now I'm leaning towards the Lancer purely because of the lame HK status LMAO
But I just cant get over the fact that the 3 is prettier. But its also more girly. I've been trying to ignore my femininity for 18 years, why not do it for a couple of years more. Arrghh IDK!

My parents bought a Mitsibishi (sp?) about 5 years ago brand new. Lasted us 1 year, and then was like a ticking time bomb. In my opinion they are not a good car that will last.

I myself, am getting a Mazda 3. The newish design, mostly because I picture cars as people (the lights kinda look like eyes) and so I would pick a car that sort of smiles at me. Idk, i'm sort of weird like that. BUT GET A MAZDA THREE!

My friend, you are not weird at all. This is also how I see cars. I find that the Toyota Yaris looks like a dinosaur egg with wheels. And  mini coopers look like bugs on the road.

Holden Cruze looks like a pretty nice car which is in a similar price range. Civic is also a good looker :P
But yeah i would go with the mazda unless you're gonna just a couple of thousand onto the lancer....

Yeah, if there's one recommendation I'd make and stand by, it'd be the Civic :)

In my opinion, the best looking small car out of the lot. The roofline slops like a sports car and the interior is surprisingly spacious. It's not plagued by wierd design cues seen in the other cars and look great in dark colors.

Rather cheap, reliable, quiet and a pleasure to ride/drive. The sound of the R18 engine is rather nice too, very Honda-ey. Oh and bragging rights to the unique dashboard layout ;) And and and, the wipers are located at each end of the windshield for extra visibility!

Our main car is a Civic, thus I know very well. If you want to know anything about it let me know :)

If you don't mind me asking, why the hell are you or your parents forking out $23K on a brand new first car?

Let me remind you that we are  talking about your first car. A car you'll still be learning in. A car you'll be making mistakes in.

The bodywork will get dents, the paint will get chipped, the alloys will get gutter rash, birds will shit all over it, and perhaps most importantly, it'll depreciate like hell.

And being a new car, if you want it to keep its value, you're going to have to get logbook servicing. I don't know if you get some deal with new cars where they do it for free or something, but if you don't, it'll be a huge waste of money. Whereas if you had a used car, someone you knew (or even you), could do the servicing for next to nothing.

Also I'm going to guess insurance won't be cheap as you've only just got your license and it'll be a new car.

To put it in perspective for you, $23K, or even half that, can go a long way in terms of a used car. I don't even know where to start. Even $10K can get you a really decent first car; that leaves you you $13K to spend on something else, perhaps something more worthwhile. Save up for a deposit on property? Save up for a proper car that you'll be able to drive when you get off your greens and leave the bullshit restrictions behind you.

You know me to be quite a car nut, but even I'm not dumb enough to spend that much on a first car. $23K is a lot of money.

From this thread I gather you want something small, something that looks good, something thats fuel efficient and 'powerful'. There are so many cars that fit under that critera, which you can get used, for so much less than $23K.

Anyway I'll get in touch with you and then we'll talk.

Also if you guys are talking about Civics, the JDM EP3 Civic Type R was the last decent Civic produced I'd say. The new gen is rubbish.

LOL nope, everything shall be under dad's name, with me as a second driver. Rego, insuarance etc. That way I can take up his demerit points :)

I was all for the Cruze until Dad said not coz a whole bunch of his mechanic mates said it was shit coz it had a european engine. But I dont want to think about other cars, I'm already confused at the moment!! Dont tell me how good the Civic is!!

@SPDHD I know, I was all for getting a used car, but even then it would be a 09', 10' sort of old LMAO But dad said Brand new, and I said OK.
Oh and today I chipped off a bit of my mums cars' hub caps coz I smashed into a curb really fast when i was parking LOL
But I also drove a Lancer as well. Its really responsive, I like it, but I'm yet to drive a 3

So the deal I'm most likely to get from Mitsubishi is: Lancer ES + Convenience Pack (Bluetooth, Reverse Parking sensors, reversing camera, electrochromatic rear view mirror with reversing monitor, leather wrapped steering wheel (yeah always what I wanted LMAO) steering wheel audio & phone controls, front map lamps) + spoiler of some sort + tint = 23000
Which is pretty damn good, I think. I was thinking about the SX but they dont have them in black at all, anywhere in Aus, so thats a no.
And I dont think the lancer looks good without any form of Spoiler, but I'm not sure what type I'm getting.
From Mazda: 3 Neo + Bluetooth + Tint + someother shit that I forgot like floor mats

Good questions; my car came with half the paint sun faded, engine swapped (the original blew), front end smash repaired, the rear caved in a little, dents, bumps, rust and overall not great condition. In addition, a cracked windscreen from the Christmas day hail.

The thing is, all cars depreciate very quickly. I can't even begin to imagine how much value is lost the moment you turn the key and drive it out the dealer.

23k is a tremendous amount of money, especially for a used car in need of upgrades or fixing. I could use that money for a respray and bodywork repair :)

The EP3 is only good for the K20A, it just doesn't look Honda like the other Type R variants. Don't forget the DC5 ITR - Championship white + black wheels = awesome.

Do not get me started on the latest Civic Type R. The bloody thing has refrigerator handles for door handles and there are triangles everywhere.

Would it be possible convincing them about buying something second hand, saving a lot of money? New cars these days...

My favorite cheapish small car is the Subaru inpreza hands down, mostly for being awd when the rest are all fwd. IMO you're better off getting a slightly older car, 2008 - 2011, will be much cheaper or you can get top of the range for the same price as a brand new base model. I recently went looking for a car, but settled for hand-me-down 2001 falcon of my brother's which is dual fuel (cheap) and has an awesome aftermarket sound system. If I was to get a new car for ~20k, I'd pick an old Mazda MX-5, a Subaru impreza or maybe the sports model holden cruze (wimpy engine though). Mazda 2, 3 6 are quite common and bland. Lancers are ugly.
Edit: i mean non-evo lancers are ugly. Also Hondas are worth considering for vtec
