Diploma of Language (Monash)

Just a few questions regarding the Diploma of Language

1) Is there a form or something I need to fill out to say that I want to do it?

2) Is the workload high? i.e. Would it be manageable for someone doing a Eng/Comm Double Degree?

3) How do I find out the costs involved?

4) If I choose do a language I did in VCE, would the course be shorter? i.e. Would it still add an extra year to my degree?

Any help would be appreciated :)

Application forms are available from the Faculty of Arts Coursework Office at the relevant campus, or email [email protected]

For non-arts students entry to the diploma requires the approval of your home faculty or home university. Students admitted into the diploma negotiate a suitable program of study in consultation with their home faculty, and the relevant language discipline. You should discuss your application with your home faculty and seek approval before lodging the application form.
Get approval, then go to the arts office in the Menzies building, they'll probably have a form for you to fill out

2) Languages generally have a semi-high workload. Depending on the language you choose, it will probably have many small assessments scattered throughout the semester all worth 5% or 10% of your mark, so you can't afford to slack off and then cram for the exam

3) It should be covered by HECS or HELP or whatever the heck it's called nowadays

4) No you'd just start and finish at a higher level, you still need to do 48 credits worth of subjects (i.e. equivalent to an arts degree major)

Once you get your offer and you accept it, I would email the arts office email above ^, and also your home faculty (which I believe would be engineering if you're doing com/eng) - they'll advise you as to what you should do next.

I'm currently overseas, so would it be too late to start the application process when I come back on the 27th? Or should I start making calls now?

Send them an email [email protected] and also an email to your home faculty (I don't know which degree you're doing sorry), just say that you are interested in applying for the diploma and ask what you should do.
