it's a bit costly from what i have heard but i may be wrong :P
i go to jmss and we use the sports centres/gym for cocurricular. The gym has high quality equipment, air con, tv and trainers, so it is quite typical to a local gym, the only thing is that its conveniently in the uni.
They also have programs such as pilates, boxing etc.
so all in all, it is similar to a local gym but if you are looking for the convenience of exercising straight after your lectures then go for it :P

Pros for the gym are :

You can go with friends at the same time and thats what makes gym fun
Easy Access
Cheaper than most gyms
price compared to quality is good

Cons:

Can get crowded during peak hour. Gone once for peak hour never gone again in that time. Best time to go is anytime before 4pm. There will be decent amount of people there but you have your own space. Also with the upgrades a lot more space has opened up

I live on campus so I'm at the gym all the time. I can't really comment on price (res kids get a further discount than students do), but I pay $190 a semester approx. No idea what the normal rate is, but I know our discount is pretty significant.

I've never been a member of another gym before so can't really comment on it comparatively. I like it though, atmosphere is really nice, heaps of free machines and the classes are great as well. Agree with peak times though, generally 6.30-9am is pretty busy, as is 4pm-7pm. That being said, I've never had to really wait around for a machine to be free, but I mainly do cardio and not weights (machine weights are pretty busy at that time, I've noticed).

I've been to Monash gym and Fitness First (Syndal). Monash is incredibly cheap and has more than enough to  satisfy your needs. Of course Fitness First is generally a much nicer facility with more equipment and the added bonus of Spin classes etc. ... but I don't think that's enough to pay almost double.

Been to quite a few gyms and personally find the Monash one to be the best. Fitness First wins on equipment, but other things make monash nicer.

There's a bit of a community thing going on, the people there are nice, pretty much all the equipment you need, and it's very cheap.

I pay 24 a forthnight on direct debit, it would be a bit cheaper yearly. It's about 30 a forthnight if you want group class + swimming pool access. With the gym you also get access to a nice boxing circuit.

It can get pretty crowded in terms of timing, hours to avoid are pretty much 5-7 and 7-9am

If its 190/semester (not including the holidays) you're actually paying more.

It includes holidays and we get full centre access (pool, classes etc) - so it's a fair bit cheaper than the normal rate I think.
