matt123, you appear to be very focused on the amount of money that these careers make. No doubt that you shouldn't think about it, since money is quite important, however the way you word "pharm is actually broke" and "stuck with pharmacy" makes it appear as you do really care just about the money. You keep finding reasons not to do pharmacy, and since you're not happy with it, why continue?

But if you really just want to get into med in the long run, I think pharmacy would be the better choice. I'm not sure what exactly you learn in your pharmacy course, but at Monash you learn quite a lot of physiology as well as (obviously) chemistry.

And on another note, if you really think that " Pharmacy = sitting behind a counter churning out scripts", you are quite wrong :P

To be completely honest
i am not satisfied with pharmacy nor optometry as i want to medicine and thus yes , of course . im clearly only thinking about the money side of things..... if im not going to enjoy either and want to use it purely as a backup and as a entry into medicine.

i just wanna do med and i dont care if it pays less than pharmacy its where my souls at hahaha
im just so confused as for what to do right now . pharm or optom.. hmmmmmmmm
i dont know which one will be easier to get a higher gpa in
I would have thought just a plain science degree would have been a better choice but I guess it's too late now. For a higher GPA, I would have no clue, and since the optom course is new, we have no idea what it's going to be like. I would stay in pharmacy if I were you, unless you can research a bit more on the optom course to see what all the units are going to be like.

I was going to do science but wanted a better backup just incase i didnt get into postgrad med.
having said that , i had no clue about the whole pharmacy going downhill dilemma and i honestly had the intention of working in a hospital as a pharmacist but i guess that is very hard to do nowadays.

i think its a bit risky doing optom as its a new course and i should stick to pharm
but because im paranoid and always have to consider every angle , i have to realize that there is a good chance i wont get into med and thus "stuck " with pharmacy as apposed to being "stuck" with optometry which conveniently and apparently pays alot higher.

We're going in circles here.
A few people have said Pharmacy over Optometry and you're still undecided man.
Optometry doesn't pay higher. If you're good at Pharmacy, you'll get where you need to go. That's if you get into Med.
Med however would be better with a Pharmaceutical background.

So overall, Pharmacy is your better choice.

Cheers. Its just so hard to decide ... I have lots of family  ( arab parents) telling me to do optom if its a better backup.
and also im not from the wealthiest family , so the 30k about to be spent on accommodation if i study pharmacy is really another factor as opposed to staying at home and studying optom.

Optometry from Deakin would probably not be a better backup. It's not even accredited yet, it's brand new and no-one really knows. If it was Optometry from UNSW, it would be a different decision.

thats true
but a well established uni like deakin wouldnt put out a course without knowing they will get accreditation.

just putting my 2 cents worth :)

From my careers counsellor's general ranting i have gathered that your monash undergrad looks better when you apply for post grad over deakin. about 10 months ago i wanted to study law and asked about pathways into it, basically you are better off doing arts at monash than doing law at deakin and transferring according to the careers person - so applying this to your situation.... i would just finish pharmacy at monash and maybe have a more positive outlook on it, but i have no personal experience so feel free to ignore my small inner conflict :)

btw have u considered dentistry? - you seem to consider wage as a significaant factor (which understandably it is important)

He's not at Monash, he's at JCU.

awks..my mistake..sorry, but u still could consider dentistry :) but if you are passionate about med it really shouldn't matter how much u hate pharmacy as long as u keep looking optimistic to the future and continue to do well :)

I hate dentistry lol
im not in it for the money . im happy to do med and be making $20 an hour .. it dosnt bother me . i just want to do med hahaha
the problem is .. i dont like pharmacy . .AND IT PAYS CRAP .. just to top it off ... so you can understand why i want to make the change to optom .. so that just incase i dont get my dream medicine .. i wouldnt be stuck with something that i both dont like and that pays crappy aswell.

optom and pharm i dont like .. .but i probably enjoy pharmacy alot more than optom .. well the course anyway.
