I actually enjoy doing languages as a 'break' from my essay-focused subjects. The content is fast-paced but as long as you keep up with the constant, small amounts of revision/homework you will do well. I also found it really easy to stand out in the class in terms of skill just by doing the assigned homework, as a lot of people in my class didn't do this.
I think the most important thing about the language learning is going over vocab revision - you need to do this or speaking and forming sentences becomes much harder. It is something you will need to practice on a regular basis. That being said, all the study and revision you will do is so very straight forward so it doesn't feel stressful at all (unless you haven't been keeping up).
I had friends who did German and barely came to class, failed a few tests and only ever crammed the night before - they still got a high credit. I got a HD and I didn't even feel like I put that much effort in.
German also gave me my highest mark in both semesters that I did it and helped boost my GPA. And even though I hate the culture component, I am going to be continuing on and doing a dip. lang as well
I'm sure ninwa or someone else can help with queries about French specifically
