I believe the courses at Monash and ANU are quite good (I was going through a law phase myself). While Melbourne's JD is exceptional, there is no guarantee you'll get into it after your Arts degree. I've also heard Deakin is trying to build up a reputation for law as well, especially in commercial law.

So where to go for engineering courses? RMIT, Monash or UoM? :S

Agree with Monash and ANU. Deakin is definitely not too shabby, and my friend was able to transfer from Deakin to Monash without much trouble, so it must be somewhat reputable. 
In regards to engineering, can't speak for RMIT or Monash, but I know someone who is completing engineering at UoM and finds it excellent, even for his unrelenting standards. I believe he is working for a firm whilst completing his studies, so he is gaining knowledge, experience and cash
