Currently I am studying my second year at Monash Med and am looking for students interested in UMAT tutoring. From my first experience with UMAT practice materials, I have always thoroughly enjoyed the UMAT and all the preparation that I myself have done for it. As a result I have started UMAT tutoring last year and have developed some great experience in teaching it to students. However despite how much I like the UMAT, unfortunately I believe it to be a rather poor exam myself as there are several flaws within the exam that can be exploited to improve one's marks provided they practiced and trained themselves with UMAT material. It is this aspect of self-improvement in the UMAT that I aim to teach to my students with material and questions that I have written myself.
I have been offered a job at medentry to write UMAT questions, and now have written over a hundred questions and counting. From last year, not only have I accumulated a lot of theoretical material that I have written, but have consistently improved my material and questions based on feed back.
I teach my lessons in a dynamic manner and get my students to do a variety of activities including various different types of tests. Each lesson I try and hand some new notes about new matter and new questions which I also mark and provide feedback for, especially focusing on the logical thinking patterns behind answering each type of question.
My main forte is section 3 (although I tutor section 1 as well and am looking to broaden myself by finding other friends and colleagues who expertise in section 2) and most of my questions and theory focus on this section and section one. Within one year I have practically created a silly new language of terms and words which I use to communicate various theoretical and logical concepts which I try and explain to my students.
The main challenge in tutoring the UMAT lies in the inherent difficulty of being able to communicate "thoughts" to other students. As a result, to date, I have almost created my own language with various made-up words and terms to help overcome this barrier. Much of my theoretical material is based on using such different logical and non-verbal techniques. I also focus on the type of mindset and attitude that students should have when doing the UMAT and how they should be approaching each question. Recently I am working on a new area with some of my students whereby we are looking at short-term memory and interpretation of logical patterns in S1 as well as the different stages of approaching an S3 question and when to use the various different S3 techniques.
Overall I have thoroughly enjoyed UMAT tutoring for the last year and try and make my lessons as active and fun as possible. If you are interested in getting a few lessons or regular weekly classes or even some crash courses during the mid-sem hols before the UMAT etc, just let me know by sending me an email at
[email protected] or give me a text on 0433 391 332
cheers

Edit: - Just a little note guys, I have been tutoring around 6-8 students for the semester so far and everything is going quite well, I have expanded a lot of my material now and am even discussing new theories constantly with some of my more advanced students right now. Got together a sotckpile of drills and am looking for students to possibly tutor in the upcoming mid-year holidays.
