My dad runs an engineering business and works closely with the Melbourne School of Engineering faculty. He prefers UoM students simply because of the reputation the university has. As I'm currently considering Engineering myself, I've told him that Monash and RMIT also have pretty reputable courses, but he'll always pick the UoM student for an interview over the Monash or RMIT student (provided the marks are fine).

This is only my father here and not the entire Engineering community. But despite the fact it's completely wrong, some people are biassed and do seem to care about reputation. Just something to take into account. :)

Sidenote: I'm personally leaning towards the Monash BEng course at the moment, simply because obtaining a scholarship there is slightly easier than at UoM. It's also one year shorter, meaning you can start paying off those fees sooner and get into the workforce quicker.

Hence why I made it clear that what my father does is not necessarily what all engineering employers do. :P It's probably just something to think about. :)

If you work closely with a group of course you are going to prefer them over someone else.

Yes, of course. He only sees one side of the story.

I guess what I'm trying to say is to just bear in mind that while you may think common sense should prevail, you should never assume this from employers.

argonaut, can you seriously stfu about your Melbourne v Monash opinions. Every single debate, you bring up so called statistics about how grande UoM is compared to Monash and other Go8 universities. You seem to completely miss the fact that there are other factors which are used throughout the employment process. Let's talk about marks. I live about 20 mins away from Monash and about an hour away from UoM. By going to UoM, I'm losing 80 minutes each day, which could mean that I might have more time to work on my studies if I go to Monash and get better grades.

You also seem to miss the fact that the Monash Engineering faculty is probably one of the best in Australia. Honestly, get the fuck over your pig-headedness and admit that firstly, the ATAR required says nothing about the course, that your initial assumptions are wrong (UoM's Science and Monash's Science serve different purposes) and just stop blindingly defending UoM when you're clearly wrong. You seem to have fucking issues accepting that there is more than one way of looking at things. You always see things from your point of view (which might be right for you) but fail to acknowledge that others have different needs and requirements. So, stop being an asshole and wake up.

Okay here's how this works: some universities are better than others. That's great. Going to a university with a worse ranking doesn't mean that you are a bad student or that the university is bad. That is all you can infer about an undergraduate degree from rankings.
