Back titration for sodium hypochlorite and potassium iodide?

Why is a back titration needed to analyse the sodium hypochlorite content in bleach?
What gives rise for the need to use a back titration in redox titrations?

My notes say that we must first add excess potassium iodide to the solution containing the sodium hypochlorite.
But can't you just titrate the two directly, using starch as an indicator and stop when it turns blue/black? Is there such thing as a 'broad end point' for redox titrations too?

Many thanks!
