ITS SO NEW!

Hey Guys,
I just started doing Eng Lang U1 this year and what I'm realizing now is how similar and how different it is from mainstream English. I have a pretty mediocre teacher, so that's not helping me understand the concept. I am two weeks away from my first SAC and have no idea what to study. We were just dumped with a bunch of definitions and practice tests and told to study. For my first Sac we do short answer questions on two forms of discourse over the course of two periods. Any suggestions on what I may do to study it?

knowing your metalanguage is crucial for success in this subject!
since your analysing discourse, you should start off by looking at things like:
context - what is the function of the text, who is the audience, what is the relationship between participants, what is the register? - register refers to the level of formality, although its definition can be considered in a much more broader way, if you use living lingo, or if you have heinamann, id suggest looking up register in the glossary so you can get a good understanding of the concept.

then you should discuss some of the features - which might show formality/informality. look at some practice vcaa exams for the style of questions.
